Word For The Day, Wednesday, March 7, 2007 - concomitant
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 03/07/2007 | The Janitor

Posted on 03/07/2007 5:30:53 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

concomitant • \kun-KAH-muh-tunt\ • adjective

accompanying especially in a subordinate or incidental way

Example sentence:

Jane is terrified of flying, and she's also not fond of the concomitant annoyances of air travel, like waiting in long security lines.

Did you know?
Concomitant" was introduced into English at a time when many people were criticizing the use of Latinate forms in favor of more "native" words from Old English. As a descendant of Latin "concomitari" ("to accompany") and ultimately of "comes," the Latin word for companion, "concomitant" may well have been initially derided as an ostentatious inkhorn term. Indeed, two associated words, the verb "concomitate," meaning "to accompany," and another adjective, "concomitaneous," meaning "of a concomitant nature," didn't survive to accompany "concomitant" into the 18th century.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

June 13th isn't too bad, does that mean no spring break? just Good Friday? well dang they better not try to have kids go on Good Friday! and they wanted to cut the school picnic day in half? heresy!

i am going to have to monitor all three schools websites today to see what happens here. the far out counties cancelled school and nothing had even fallen out there yet. bc it started to snow after we left the house, i didn't even think to check. Someone now said 2-4" so who the heck knows what the schools will do. i hate this crap.

I think that word looks incomplete without another N or T, but I know it's right. It just looks funny.

I'm with ya!!!!

It started flurryig as I picked Becky up this morning....the 2 of them were non-stop about it in the back seat all the way to school. There were none to appreciative of my attitude that they might as well enjoy the flurries 'cause that's all we're gonna get.

I should have kept my mouth shut........it's starting to stick.

School starts in late August, so June 13th is bad from that perspective. Yep, only one day off for Easter break.

We are expecting 2-3 inches of snow, but it should be out of here by noon or so. And headed your way. Enjoy!

yeah i guess a two of mine start after labor day and 6/13 sounds about right for them. xsboy started second to last week of august and i think he's done by memorial day or so. xsteen will be graduating early June regardless of snowdays so she doesn't care how many they get.

In the aftermath of the recent Libby verdict, with the media continuing to fuel the flames that the Administration has lied about the WOT, can Commie taunts from the concomitant unwashed really be a surprise?

Yeah, the seniors are going to graduate "on time" even though they will only get 177 days of school. The state could withhold some subsidies because of it.

it would be unfair to screw over students bc of the greediness of their teachers. if i was a senior i would be bearing them some serious ill will. i realize it's the union, but even so.

I would like to apologize to everyone for the snow, which is a concomitant effect of my cleaning on Saturday. I went and put away the kids' snow-pants, thereby GUARANTEEING the snowfall.

Yah, and there's even a Kennywood picnic reference in the same thread! I'm at home today with the snow-bound kiddos, so actually have a chance to freep a bit.

how much snow has BOUND yunz? i have been monitoring my kids school's websites and nothing happening here, they will finish out the day, but i doubt xsboy will have LAX practice though. xsteen's SENIOR retreat [with attendant bonding etc which she abhors] is tomorrow and Friday up in Buckeystown MD at some Bishop's retreat center there, i know she is praying for a blizzard to call THAT off, but it's unlikely.

Mercifully, the snow started at around 4:00am (I was awake by then) so that they were able to cancel school before it ever started. We have an intersection near my house that is 4-way stop, with two of the ways going downhill into the stop. My hubbie watched one guy slide through, then he went, then another guy came down the perpendicular hill fast....and nearly smacked into hubbie, who was able to floor it and get out of the way. This was at 7:00am, which would have been schoolbus time.

I built a fire in the fireplace, and the kids are chillin' warmly watching tv.
