Maryland Boy Dies of a Toothache (and guess who is to blame)

WASHINGTON - Twelve-year-old Deamonte Driver died of a toothache Sunday.

A routine, $80 tooth extraction might have saved him.

If his mother had been insured.

If his family had not lost its Medicaid.

If Medicaid dentists weren't so hard to find.

If his mother hadn't been focused on getting a dentist for his brother, who had six rotted teeth.

By the time Deamonte's own aching tooth got any attention, the bacteria from the abscess had spread to his brain, doctors said. After two operations and more than six weeks of hospital care, the Prince George's County boy died.

Deamonte's death and the ultimate cost of his care, which could total more than $250,000, underscore an often-overlooked concern in the debate over universal health coverage: dental care.

This is journalism? "If..." "If..." How about "If this mother had not fed her son's sugar all day and never brushed their teeth..." So America is to blame for not having universal health care with dental coverage? Was this family even employed? I don't have dental insurance. But you can bet if my son had a painful abscess I would damn well take him to a dentist and arrange a payment plan. This son is dead because his mother failed him, not because we aren't a socialist nation.

Or how about 'if the mother had taken her son to the EMERGENCY department of the nearest hospital instead of waiting so she could have someone to blame for his death!'

Hopefully it's not me again. Last week they got me for the guy down the street who had a headache.

It's really sad that this boy died, and I feel bad for his mom and family. BUT this is not the fault of the 'big bad government' for failing to take care of this boy, it's the mothers.

How about if his mother had taken him to any dentist. They would have treated his emergency case and worked out a reasonable payment schedule.

I guess the government is to blame for a 12 year old
with rotten teeth. Note to self: make sure the local
food bank is stocked with tooth brushes and the DVD
of the film "Colgate New Jersey"....JJ61

For some reason the lib media seems to think this story should justify national healthcare. Why, I don't know. After all, the same folks in charge of Medicaid will be in charge of nationalized healthcare. If anything, this story serves as a reminder as to why national healthcare would be a disaster.

Anyone who thinks this story should support national healthcare should make an appointment with a Medicare/Medicaid approved proctologist because they have their heads up their butts.

Guess what? We have dental coverage and over the summer my husband's tooth abcessed and our dentist was out of town for the weekend, I have never, ever seen him in pain like that in my life to the point that I was frantic. The hospital said there was virtually nothing they could do for him, it was dental, not medical.

Why not just say a prayer of thanks that we don't live like that, and a prayer for peace for the boy's mother and his family?

Don't rip some lady apart after her kid just died.

If a kid needs help, a kid needs help. Regardless of status.

Well, which is it? She found a dentist for his brother. This is just poor parenting, poor dental hygiene and stupidity. ER's will take you even if you can't pay...and apparently she was able to hospitalize him, unfortunately, too late for the child.

Liberals haven't managed to screw up dentistry yet; one of their goals is to wrap it into healthcare so they can control and destroy it.

Why don't these people just hand their kids over to the government at childbirth?

They expect the government to raise the kid anyway.

Oh, my truck is dirty. How can the gubment let my truck stay so dirty?
Whats that? Clean it myself? You mean I have to get off my lazy ass and take some responsibilty for myself?

But I am entitled!!

For some reason, this boy had to have emergency brain surgery, too, before he died of a rotten tooth. Deamont's mother needs to get her priorites in life straight.

Who needs socialized dentistry, didn't anyone see Cast Away?

All you need is a figure skate and a mallet.
