Study:Men Hard-Wired to Ignore Wives
Fox News ^ | February 14, 2007 | Robert Roy Britt

When a man fails to help out around the house, his poor performance might be related to a subconscious tendency to resist doing anything his wife wants, a new study suggests.

Men and women are sure to argue about this one. In fact, the man and woman who led the study disagree on the meaning of the results.

Psychologists have long known about "reactance," the tendency to do the exact opposite of what's requested by a loved one or boss.

The new study aimed to find out whether the phenomenon might occur at a subconscious level.

Participants were asked to name a significant person they perceived as controlling their lives, and another who just wanted them to have fun.

Then they were asked to discern words from jumbled letters on a computer screen while the names of the people they had mentioned were flashed subliminally. The names were flashed too quickly to be registered consciously.

LOL! My husband just tells me to get to the point and reminds me that I'm not talking to "the girls".:)

It has something to do with the color. Mine was always getting in my tool box. I bought a light green box and pink and blue tools. He never touches it anymore. I even have some of his red tools in there now:')

The worst thing some women are guilty of (IMHO) is what I call the "Michener" approach. In Michener's novels, he always starts at the very beginning - like, when the earth was created - then works up to his story in modern times.

LOL! It isn't exclusive to women - I actually have a guy who works for me who does this, too. I constantly have to interrupt him about a quarter of the way into his stories to insist he get to the point. ;)

I don't like those types of conversations either. I try very hard not to talk about people behind their backs. I also like people to get to the point.

I wonder how much this study cost? And yes, I recall my ex sometimes sounding to me like the adults on Peanuts cartoons.

Wuh-wuh-wuh!

Yes, dear?

Wah-woh-wah, wah-wah?

I don't know how that hand print got on the wall, dear.

Wah-woh-wah--wa-dah-waaaah!

I'll get right on it, dear [eventually].

It works both ways. I bought my wife a different brand of cordless drill and flowered screwdriver and utility knife. That way I can tell at a glance if she's been in my tools.

Plus the fact that very few fish talk - at least once a person's medications are properly adjusted.

Men have such cool toys but yall are so selfish with them. Our biggest fights have probably been about me playing in or organizing the garage so "we" can find stuff:').

He can do that without causing a tearful fit, getting cut-off in the bedroom, and / or having to call a lawyer? 8^)

Your hubby is my new hero!

I don't take any interest in anything in the garage, so his tools are safe from me. Several years ago, in Charleston, a man was giving us a tour of the house he had renovated in the historic area, which he and his wife owned. He pointed out his study, and his dressing room, and my husband said quietly in an awed voice, "You get space.... INSIDE the house?" :-D

LOL. I wish that my wife would understand that I am there to help her, not carry her around on a pedestal. I admit I have my faults, but she parades them around like a banner on a plane. It is like I have a brand on me everywhere I go.

I have noticed that when she starts a conversation, it could last for hours intermittently. If I start one, it is complete, fast, and to the point.

So many people here are describing a picture of marriage that I don't even recognize; it sounds very stressful. Did things deteriorate to this point, or did they start out that way?

I would comfortably bet that there is considerably more intelligent, accurate and meaningful discussion taking place on this thread than anywhere in their 'scientific' study.

If I may step in here with a general comment, many women have real daddy issues. Many men don't realize what they are in for until they say "I do" and get to take daddy's place.
