Do you think an employer has the right to order their employees to get physically involved in such a thing?

Probably not, unless the employee was specifically employed to provide security, and even then there would be strict limits on what that employee could actually do. I understand that this area is something of a legal minefield. I was just pointing out that the Target corporate statement was ridiculous. A more accurate statement would be, "It is not our policy to protect our patrons from physical assault."
