The sleaze factor that we talked about in this column last week is still at work (last week’s column). All during last week, Bahamians dominated as they are by the US media were glued to their televisions sets watching the most amazing and macabre circus. There was a judge who seemed to say the least, kind of unbalanced, making all sorts of off the wall comments, allowing irrelevant questioning and hearsay evidence, in a case involving where Anna Nicole Smith, the B movie actress from the US who moved to The Bahamas and died in Florida two weeks ago, is to be buried. The whole thing was strange.
At the end of the day, the judge who reportedly broke down crying ruled that the guardian for the child of Ms. Smith who (the child) is said to be in The Bahamas should have possession of the body and it was his (the judge) wish that the body be buried next to her (Anna Nicole) son in The Bahamas. The three competing parties in this circus for the body then joined hands and went out of the court and it appeared that the body was to be shipped to Nassau.
In Nassau, the press was staked out at another event, the paternity suit in the Bahamas Courts. There the mother, the ex boyfriend and the boyfriend at the time of death are locked in combat for the guardianship of the child. So many have come out of the woodwork to say they are the father, you lose count. But not so fast about burying the body. No time soon says another judge in Florida who has apparently accepted an appeal by the mother of Anna Nicole Smith who wants to bury her daughter in Texas where she lives.
What annoys us is the commentary coming from this event about The Bahamas. In the closing moments of one of the programmes on Friday 23rd February, Bill O’Reilly who has one of these sleazy programmes on Fox News, the sleaziest of the American networks, made a stupid comment, one of many. He and Fox News specialize in right wing causes, and bad mouth anything that is progressive, black or not American. The loud mouth O’Reilly who wouldn't know a logical argument if he saw one ended his programme by saying to another puff of wind Geraldo Rivera that we all know The Bahamas government is corrupt. His ma must be corrupt. It’s that kind of stupidity that comes with the sleaze that surrounds this whole affair that is quite annoying. Mr. O’Reilly has no evidence of a corrupt Bahamas government and The Bahamas government has nothing whatever to do with this matter. This is an entirely private matter.
