Lori Jones heard her daughter's screams. She ran into the backyard and saw the pit bull on top of her daughter. It had bitten Amber in the stomach and was now attached to her neck. Frantic, Amber's mother tried to push the dog off. A man rushed to help and added the needed strength to get the dog away from both mother and daughter.

As they waited for the ambulance Lori Jones held her hands over the wounds in her daughter's neck and stomach. The dog continued to hover. Amber's father, Robert, drove from his job at the Hilton Palacio del Rio downtown to University Hospital, where Amber was airlifted.
Amber died just a couple hours later at about 6:30 p.m.

Sorry, Kanawa, but I am starting to believe human beings are too stupid to own animals. Of any kind. And while I feel for these parents their child should never have went anywhere near that dog at ANY time. The police should have been called the first time he tried jumping the fence, IMO. Truly an avoidable tragedy.

Oh please, don't you know that some dogs are just born bad? I had a Jack Russell Terrier that could not have been more socialize or trained or treated better by me and he was bad to the bone. He came from bad dogs and I couldn't change him. I finally put him down when he was 14 because he went insane.
I do not endorse what you have proposed. Nor do I encourage or endorse the theoretical actions described below.
But, from a strictly theoretical standpoint;
If a dog were shot and the body disappeared who would know.
Also, if the shot were taken from inside the house, the sound would not travel near as far.
If the bullet were in the dog's body, and it was recovered, there would be evidence against the rifle.
There are better ways than a firearm to kill a dog. Firearms are uniquely suited to self-defense and not good for committing "criminal" acts.
Of course you could always entice the pit bull to come close to you, and shoot it up close and personal. You could plead that it attacked you. Who would testify against you?

I've heard more than one anecdote on these threads about owners
who ignore similar problems when brought to their attention.
People have property rights,
but they must be responsible and ensure the enjoyment of their property

Pathetic that any of you could condone killing an innocent animal. Animals that attack humans or kill other animals should be compassionately euthanized. Otherwise, what are they guilty of?
There's some really concerning hatred rearing its head on this thread.
All of the "ban all pits/rotts/dogs" types on the Freep have NEVER responded to me when I tell them that I nearly lost an eye to a Yorkshire Terrier when I was two years old.
The dog left a permanent, albeit small now, scar on my face.
Funny, I was mauled by such a tiny, yet vicious, dog, and yet NO ONE calls for an out and out ban on Yorkies.
I own a Rottweiler who would give her life for me, has one of the sweetest temperments ever (she's a therapy dog in training) and has never shown any aggression toward other animals, people and especially, my three year old daughter. In fact, my Ursa absolutely ADORES my daughter and protects her fiercely.
My friend, an ER nurse, says the majority of dog bites that she treats are from toys and terriers. And the ONLY dog to ever bite me was a Chow (weird, inbred things.)
The local news reports said that the little girl had fed and walked the dog on a leash (with the owner's permission) in the past. This story says that the dog had been caught just like this before and she had helped him, just as she did this time.
In addition, the owners helped restrain the dog for Animal Control, who wanted to observe the dog. They have already let Animal Control know that they don't want the dog back.
My wife was seriously threatened by three pit bulls owned up the street by a very threatening owner. She had one of my children in her arms and the other in the baby carriage.
The other pit bull owner had two of them tied up in the Yard. Eventually the really violent pit bull was put to sleep.
Both of these pit bull owners testified at the Animal Control hearings about the inherent friendliness of their dogs. It took multiple violent incidents with various neighbors to force one to build a fence and keep it locked and to euthanize the other owner's dogs.
During this lengthy period of time at least two years for each different owner, there were children (and adults) in the neighborhood who were in physical danger.
As I said in the beginning of my post, I do not condone the theoretical points I raised, and definitely would not want a person to use a firearm.
I should have been more explicit in my theoretical points, they would only apply to a dog who had exhibited dangerous tendencies.
Currently there is a pit bull owner up the street who treats his dogs very well. They exhibit no dangerous tendencies. The other two pit bull owners were the pits and not only mistreated their dogs, but exhibited hostility to most people.
PS, I am not saying that you are likeable or unlikeable. Nor am I making any other judgements concerning you.
That's funny, I thought that people who shoot their mouths off with no SCIENTIFIC FACTS to back up their blanket assertions were the idiots.
And I hope every one of the imbeciles who takes your despicable advice gets put UNDER the jailhouse.
My sympathies. I suspect my lack of patience would have resulted in the Chow-Chow becoming Puppy Chow after such an encounter.
You know, I have even seen horses percieved to be gentle go bezerk at times. Too often humans think of animals in human terms. Animals do not think in terms of human law, only owner law. If the owner does not instill a code of conduct to an animal then he has no guidance. Even if the animal is trained, during an event of distress, it will often as not revert to animalistic behavior to survive. A human being will do the same thing at times.
