Girl, 10, was killed trying to help dog

Lori Jones heard her daughter's screams. She ran into the backyard and saw the pit bull on top of her daughter. It had bitten Amber in the stomach and was now attached to her neck. Frantic, Amber's mother tried to push the dog off. A man rushed to help and added the needed strength to get the dog away from both mother and daughter.

As they waited for the ambulance Lori Jones held her hands over the wounds in her daughter's neck and stomach. The dog continued to hover. Amber's father, Robert, drove from his job at the Hilton Palacio del Rio downtown to University Hospital, where Amber was airlifted.

Amber died just a couple hours later at about 6:30 p.m.

The family wants Amber's death to be a lesson to others about the dangers of dogs. But, they said, they had no reason to think this dog, whose name they did not know, would ever attack their daughter.

"She was in the back just like she had been 100 times before," Megan said.

What it boils down to is that some people should not be dog owners just as some people should not have guns at their disposal. Also, some breeds of dogs take a certain type of attitude by the owner to be controled. A meek shy person has no business owning a dog that has the potential of inflicting great physical harm. The owner has to be stronger willed than the animal.

This MSM-fueled jihad against them, (and Dobermanns and Rottweilers - other distinguished and great breeds), is just silly. Its not the dog, its the owner/handler/trainer.

There's no conspiracy. There is article after article here on FR about killings and maimings by pit bulls.

The veterinary degree came out of Texas A&M Vet Med Dept. It is my brother's degree and he has taught me well.

Dauschund would bite me whenever I made the mistake of getting between her and her food, to include trying to deny her a bone she carried into the house.

A dog like that should be turned over to someone who knows what they're doing for proper socialization.

I also have a Rott. he's 6 now and even though he weighs close to 170lbs and has a mouthfull of teeth, he's a BIG BABY.

He even tries to hide under the bed whining when there's a thunderstorm

Never said any breed is inherently aggressive. Never said all pitbulls should be put down. I own a 13 year old pitbull, but I call them bulldogs.

Thats what I said. You have dogs that can't be made aggressive, you have some that can go either way and some who are aggressive no matter how well they are raised.

Dogs act strictly on instinct. And, I disagree that Rufus bit you because "he didn't recognize your smell."

Rufus bit you because he was distressed and in pain...and he was lashing out at anything that moved as his way of defending himself against further injury and he saw a hand and bit it....even though it was the hand of his owner.

I'm sure the "Pit bulls aren't dangerous" crowd will weigh in on this one, but I came to the conclusion years ago that there is an inverse relationship between IQ and the viciousness of dog breed owned by any particular person. Only idiots own pit bulls. It's a tragedy waiting to occur.

Too late. After slightly less than 19 years, the improperly socialized Sadie went to doggie heaven. Don't know why my dogs seem to live such doggone long doggy lives. :-)

I second that. And what's odd is, even given that in all these stories the breed is always pit bull, people try to exempt their dog. My pit bull is a moron. The cat hassles him all the time, he's really docile. ......... Nope. I think anybody with firearms ought to do as you propose and just contribute to the extermination of this species.

There is a Pit Bull two houses down.

My fairly new next door neighbor has three young daughters who were terrified to go out into their yard to play. The dog was just too big and menacing.

The neighbor fixed the problem by erecting an eight foot wooden privacy fence. The girls now enjoy their yard . . . fearlessly.

Is there a difference between the jaw of a pit bull and a lab? Is there a difference between the pressure applied and is there a "locking" of a pit bull's jaw vs. that of a lab? I have heard that there is a huge difference. Is this true? If it is, I think that is a distinction. Also, is there a difference between when a lab bites a kid? When a lab bites, is it usually once or twice or is it an all out attack that is hard to stop? The stories I read of pit bulls seem to be an all out attack that takes multiple people to stop and not just a dog bite. I am not for government intervention except severe consequences and mandatory put down of dog when it attacks, but these are the concerns I have about pit bulls. Last summer Joey Porter's two pit bulls got out and killed a neighbor's miniature horse. He got his dogs back. I have a major problem with that. But, something tells me the neighbor can now buy 30 or so miniature horses.
