an. 15, 2007 issue - Last April, Duke lacrosse star Reade Seligmann huddled with his dad at a Durham, N.C., law firm. A stripper hired to perform at a team party on March 13 claimed several players raped her. In a lineup, she'd identified three of them as her alleged assailants. Seligmann now awaited a call from the prosecutor that would tell him if he was one of the players she'd singled out. He felt certain he would be cleared. The call came. Reade, 20, was being indicted for first-degree rape, kidnapping and sexual offense. He had a strong alibi—cell-phone records would show he was busy calling his girlfriend at the time the alleged crime was taking place—but the D.A. declined to hear it. As he heard the news, Reade looked at his dad. It was the first time he'd ever seen his father cry. Then it hit him: how was he going to tell his mom? Kathy Seligmann was home in New Jersey with her three other boys. He dialed her number. "Mom," he said, "she picked me."
Just before the new year, Reade sat with NEWSWEEK for an exclusive four-hour interview, the first time any of the players has spoken in depth about the hellish months since the party that March night. Even now he gets emotional thinking about what his parents have gone through. Remembering that first call to his mother, he says, "It was like the life was sucked out of her." Before he hung up, he made her promise not to watch his arrest on TV. The next day, at home, she went to look for her 14-year-old, Ben. She found him in his room, sobbing in front of the TV. "Why are they doing this to him, Mom?" he asked.

My belief based on the transcript of the photo array session is that she was certainly brief not to pick certain people. And do you happen to know that she picked 4 lacrosse players and the authorities picked 3 to indict?

I vaguely recall that, but I'm on information overload on this case. I say I recall it because I recall speculating that she'd picked badly (i.e., #4 was out of town).

More like the taint will never ever leave Nifong. The boys have been unjustly accused and nothing will convince honorable people of anything different. As for the rest, they're the people who were happy OJ went free because he killed a white woman and a jewish boy.

In all three lineups the only guy she consistently picked as being at the party (i.e. not a rapist) was out of town. K C J had a good post on this just a couple of days ago.

If that fact alone doesn't weigh heavily with the judge to toss the line-up IDs, I don't know what would. Surely he will move to dismiss this case based on lack of evidence to move it forward, don't you think?
Is that while wearing shorts , helmet and swinging a butterfly net or in street attire?

She simply chose 3 or 4 people she thought she remembered from the Party. Occam's razor trumps probability when there are no other facts. I, for one, have no idea and have seen no data on which guys on the team come from the richest families.
That she was likely coached by Gottlieb is in my mind a more reasonable supposition than she was able to pinpoint the rich kids.
How much mystery is attached to the fate of the 4th guy she had picked? Do we have his name? Is he local? Are his parents rich?
