The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, I didn’t know there was a delay for review now... that’s new.

If we’d have known we would have warned ya. :~)

Feel free to introduce yourself, all I know is you’re a ‘single’ lady, and that you have a new Appaloosa baby. :~)

We never figured out what made that noise. It wigged us out though.

Hopefully it won’t be repeated. Going to bed here soon... you’ll have to hold down the fort. :~)

Tomorrow we’ve got the inlaws back, meeting them at the beach house.

Welcome to the thread. Looking forward to your posts and pictures:)

Hair and ecurbh are the local experts on coaching the process of posting pictures.

I’m off to feed Debbie’s horse’s. Wish me luck on moving the baby:), I’m not looking forward to it. I’ll get pictures of him, and anything else I see of interest. Most of it you’ve seen before.

Becky

...Besides that, I think it gets dark before supper doesn’t it? I wouldn’t be able to see much.

It depends on when you go. That would be true in the winter, but I think in the summer it would stay lighter longer than where you live, just because it's farther north. My husband just got back from a business trip to Germany and he said it stayed light until about 10:30pm over there.

Hi Rocky! Welcome to the forum! I think you’ll like the layout over here better than over on Horse.com. It’s more like one long running conversation rather than a bunch of different ones. No goofy kids over here either. We’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Is that colt halter broke yet? If he is, I’d put a halter an lead on him too, then if he runs up on you or gives you any flack you can make him regret it by jerking that lead rope back and forth. And 2 months old is definately old enough for him to be halter broke. I did that to Goose when he’d get sassy and he’s very respectful on a lead line now.

Good morning... Rockridge, do you have a photobucket account?

If so... copy the "HTML" code they provide there... otherwise, you upload them to where ever you load pictures usually, and the code is:

< img src="URL HERE"> (only don't put a space after the <, I have to do that to make it show up)

You'll want to separate paragraphs with < p> (again, no space)

Italics, used to show quotes here is < i>quote< /i>

Clear as mud?

Good morning! Sipping some coffee here before we've got to head up to the beach house.

That’s 3 of us who haven’t been. We need to take a field trip:’) I just declined. I should be braver:’) Anyway , they just offered me another assignment about 2 hours from here. I can work that around my schedule and make the same. No SOL though.

Maybe someday. My son plans to move there in 6 years. Nothing against Washington, but I was hoping he would come back to Texas.

I enjoyed the pictures and the tale:) Nice lunch break.

No he is not halter broke that I know of. Him and his mother belong to an older couple , 70’s, and they are for nothing but patting:\. Even the mare doesn’t have a lot of manners, IMO. Kind of crowds on the lead line, and either drags behind or drags forward. Luckily the distance I have to go with them is not far, and 1/2 of the distance is up the alley way of the barn. I stayed close to one side in the barn so the foal had to walk on the other side of the mare that I was on. When we got to the round pen, he hesitated at the gate, and looked like he might go exploring, but I moved momma further in and he came right one. I have a few pictures I’ll post in a bit. But I had trouble getting his whole body, because they were crowding up to the fence to see what I was doing...I was running back and forth on the outside trying to get them from a distance:)

Well, glad the first move went OK :~)

Seemed like whenever I’d farmsit for Bob... all his routines would just backfire on me. He’d say “just put the feed in the stalls, open the doors, and then go open the pasture gate. They’ll go right in their stall” I did that, and horses ran every which way, none of them went in the right stalls. I led them in after that... at least the troublemakers. :~)

LOL! Ain't that always the way it is. They KNOW they'll get in trouble if they go in the wrong place when Bob's there, but when he's not, then all bets are off. They wanna see if they can get by with grabbing a bite of somebody else's supper and having their own too. Pretty crafty.

Debbie’s place is set up for ultimate ease for feeding. There is never more then 2 horses in a run, and they have always been good about coming in their correct stalls, as long as you let the right one in first, close that door then open the second. Then while they are eating I throw the hay in the run, so they are always more then happy to leave their stalls.

When I had my original setup here, if you recall, the stalls were along the back of the barn and to let them in, I’d open the door and Bay and the pony would just walk in.

The daughter of one of the store clerks was going to feed one night because we were going to be very late. I told her 99% of the time, Bay will walk right past pony’s door and into his own. If he doesn’t, pony will be confused for a minute and then go into Bay’s. Only happens once in a blue moon, but if that happens, just LEAVE THEM THERE. Close the gates and leave them. Because at that point, it is fairly complicated for one person to get them switched.

Sure enough, when I got home late that night, they were in the wrong stalls. Horses are pretty good at routines, but if you change one thing (who’s operating the door) they sometimes think all bets are off. ;~)

I like the setup with runs and connected stalls. That does make it nice. Too bad baby isn’t in one of those!
