This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well, I finally bought a new trailer this weekend! We drove about 2 and a half hours over to almost Memphis on Saturday and picked it up. And of course since it’s been as dry as a dust bowl around here for the last 4 months, it had to come an absolute monsoon on the way back. But I’m not complaining at all. The rain has been VERY welcome. But we made it ok and I’m tickled with it. It hasn’t been properly christened with horse poop yet because it’s been raining off and on all weekend, and I’m in the process of adding a few more rubber mats to the inside walls to keep it from getting skinned up, but hopefully by this weekend I’ll be ready to take it on it’s maiden run. I haven’t taken any pictures yet, for the same reasons that I haven’t hauled anything in it yet, but I’ll try to remedy that by this evening. I even met a lady while I was at the trailer lot who may want to buy my old trailer, so that would be nice too. But I’m afraid that it’s going to be too small for her. She has a Clyde, and my trailer is only 6’6” X 5’, so I don’t really hold out much hope, but that’s ok. It should bring a decent price at the local auction. If I get $800 for it, I’ll be happy. It’s got one crooked axle and is eating up tires on the passenger side like there’s no tomorrow so I’ll be glad to be rid of it. Somebody else can afford to fix it for that price.
LOL! He probably just did that to be spiteful. I'm sure he got a good laugh out of their reaction.
Congrats on the new trailer! Good for you! I look forward to the pictures!
Well the vet finally called back about how much antibiotic I’m suppose to be giving..it was 35 cc’s a day, all at once, for 7 days. the reason, because it’s close to a joint
Becky
All ot ONCE?! Holy Crap! I’d always heard to only give 10ccs in one place too. I’m sure she knows what she’s talking about, but DANG, you’d think that would open a huge space in the muscle tissue and would be bound to hurt too. But hey, do what the vet says coz I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn last night. ;o)
Huh! Well, I’m sure you’ve done well enough so far, since it’s not showing any sign of swelling.
Probably wouldn’t hurt to massage it real well afterwards, disperse it in.
Well, I’m still only suppose to put 10 in an injection site, so that is 3 sticks at the least.
Becky
Good for you on the new trailer:)...2 horse? slant? straight load? What’s it like:)?
Becky
WEll, he didn’t like that at all...by the third stick he was backing up on me. This could be fun by the 7th day:\
Becky
Heh... yeah.. He may hold a bit of a grudge by the end of that.
OH OH OH! I thought when you said ALL AT ONCE that she meant to give it all in one injection. Duh! My bad.
I had to do Blade like that one time for 10 days when he stepped on a nail, but he only had to have 12ccs twice a day and since 12 is so close to 10 I just gave it all in one spot each time. He really hated to see me coming after about the 2nd day, but he never gave me trouble about catching him. He's a sweetheart.
It’s going to be interesting to see how he handles this for 7 days...I’m afraid his neck is going to get sore...I may get some more bute to start giving him towards the end. I don’t think i want to give him bute for 7 days straight, but a little the last 3 days won’t hurt anything.
Becky
At least it’s not like Tetanus, where the shot itself makes them sore.
Can you alternate and give some in the rump?
I never liked to give rump shots. I was always afraid of getting kicked. And even the calmest of horses might have that reaction when you’re jabbing what amounts to a finishing nail into their butt. Just the thought of it makes me cringe.
Last fall we had to give Jake injectable antibiotics because he would not eat his food with it on there, no matter what we tried. We gave 10cc a day for 7 days and definitely by the end of the week he was not happy to see us!
After about 5 days of shots we feld sorry for Jakes neck and decided to try his rump. NOT, he did not like that at all and bend the needle!
OUCH!!
