This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well, if he is eating and drinking on his own, I’d think that was a good sign.
Has the weather there changed right before he got sick...gotten really hot?
Becky
As long as he’s comfortable just leave him to rest. If you have yogurt you might offer him some. If you take him outside, try to do so with a leash, if he’s in heart failure or something similar, he’s liable to go away and hide somewhere.
I didn’t use Agdirect this time - Tracey listed some horses there for me once so I have no idea what my password, login, account is/was :)
I read the book, and did not like it, really despised the mother. I saw it was on today so I set it to record. Just watched the opening scene, and wondering if I want to continue.

This is a sudden change to near helplessness. I think it's probably it for him. He gets up to move around, but only feet at a time. He did go out and try to potty, but it exhausted him. He ended up just laying down in the dirt, and he did end up peeing a little and pooping, but while he lay there I think, it was there when I picked him up. Poor old guy.
I've made him a cage of sorts in a corner with a part of an old crib. I hate to sortof confuse and isolate him like that, but we're cleaning and making a lot of trips in and out of the house, and I fear he's going to wander outside and go under the house. We'd not be able to get him back out.
He's really making a lot of noise to breathe now, I can hear from from where I sit.
The opening scene is very graphic, isn’t it? ~shudder~
I am kindof like you, I don’t care for any of the characters, and it’s sortof a love story with occasional bits about the horse.
I’m so sorry. It’s very hard to see one down like that.
I hope this doesn’t sound calloused...but from the sounds of it, the way he is breathing...it may not be long now.
I’m really sorry, this is tough for you coming at a time when you are expecting company, and getting ready.
I’ll be thinking of you.
Becky
I just don’t remember much about the book, other then I really really did not like the mother, and I hated the ending, which from what I’ve heard is completely different from the movie.
The opening scene was pretty bad....my dog went and hid:)...all my gasping and groaning scared her I think:)
Becky
Not callous at all... He’s a really old cat, and the end was going to come eventually. I’d actually rather he pass peacefully now than have him linger for days, it would be a relief if he did. He had a good life, I’m at peace with it. If he’s still here, and like this tomorrow, we’ll probably take him in and have him put down.
I didn’t read the book, so I don’t know how different it is.
I believe you are making the right decision. The way you have him set up right now is very good, he’s confined and no one can bother him.
I do it because it has to be done but I don’t like giving shots either.
He looks comfortable.
I’m a total wash out - and I’m sure it’s just a mental block but I’m a real wimp about shots, getting them or giving them. You would think an adult could get past that.
Maybe that’s it. I am a firm believer in oral meds - no needles at all.
That’s the safest route.
LOL - I’ll remember that too.
Becky
