This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well, yeah, I think giving a horse a shot is easier then someone giving ME a shot:)
Becky
Yeah - I don’t love going oral meds in horses either... especially if you’d have to do it a few times a day. That gets old real quick, for horse and human.
The bute... I think you’ll have to syringe it. I think Bute is so bitter they smell it, or taste it, no matter what you put in the feed to sweeten the deal. I’ve wasted meds that way... at least I know Bay won’t eat it.
I usually buy the pills, and we have a mortar and pestle to mash them with, then I add molasses and warm water. I’ve heard of people using applesauce instead... that sounds interesting.
You know re-reading here....it’s funny something I cannot do is give a dog a shot. I can’t even watch the vet do it. I don’t know why, but seeing dogs, especially Susie, who has never reacted at all to one, makes me really woozy. I can’t handle that.
Becky
Oh me neither... Tiff does... and cats too... she gave her kittens their shots.
This is his foot this morning, not much to see really, except the duct tape is coming loose, I'm going to fix that, I really don't want this thing coming off, because I don't wrap well.
The syringe, that is a quarter laying there for size. 35cc's would have been that thing full, there is about 11 in it.
Picking the spot.
Scratching the spot to desensitize it.
The stick.
And in the end, there was no blood from the injection site...yeah:)
Becky
GAH! Nicely done with the pictures... that one of the syringe in his neck made me shudder! Really!
LOL...he kind of looked at me, when I left it hanging there to get the camera and take a picture, but he never moved.
Becky
Oh, that’s a big dang syringe isn’t it? That just had to be to much all at once.
I called and left a message asking, but she’s never called me back. I don’t think she is much of a weekend vet.
Becky
It’s a huge syringe, yeah. I can’t believe it stayed in :~)
Sometimes Bay can tighten his neck and pop them back out, even when the vet does it.
Well, we’ve got breakfast and errands on our agenda... we’ll be back in a bit... hopefully fed, with new shoes, and some new summer clothes!
Bob has shown me a million times how to give shots. I still can't make myself do it. Not horses, not cats, not dogs. If it were up to me, I'd haul to the vet to get the shots done, I just have an extreme phobia about it.
I need six for the internet ad I believe, for a flyer I think two or three are fine.
The under saddle ones are all good, particularly the trotting ones! I’d retake the standing poses though, she looks like she’s favoring her right hind. It wouldn’t be a big deal in one shot, but she’s either resting that foot, or has it forward, in every single pose. I’d try to get one good shot where she’s good and square on that foot.
You’re right, I hadn’t noticed that. I was having a heck of a time getting pictures with four feet on the ground. The minpins run is off just to the right and they were barking their heads off. She was convinced they were killers :)
Heh... it seem like the minute you want them to stand square they stand like dorks anyway, minpins or no :~)
Well BamBam has never been shown so she’s never really been taught to square up. She has been taught to stand with all her feet on the ground but as you said, that all went out the window this morning. She spent a bit of time on two feet until Bob reminded her that she should worry more about what he said than the min pins barking.
When I was working for that vet, I learned right quick how to give vaccines to dogs and cats and even IV fluids in cats. But I’ve never had to stick a horse.
That’s good to know how to do that. It won’t be hard for you with a horse. I really wish I could get past my phobia on it.
Very nice pictures. Very nice horse:)
Becky
I don’t know why, but I think it would be harder to stick a dog or cat then a horse.
