The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

luckily she always dropped them before they exploded.

Oh wow, good thing she did. Those things can cause a lot of damage and burns. Nice pictures. Glad you guys had a good time. JP is such a cutie.

I’d say they spend quit a lot, but, I know my parents use to buy stuff straight from a manufacturer, it is cheaper that way and you can get bigger stuff. I imagine there are places on line now a days to order stuff thru. We were talking about that last night too.

Will probably smoke some ribs this weekend

hmmmm, that sounds good! Do you have a charcoal/wood or electric smoker? Food is just so great on those.

Oh and thanks, it was a nice show.

Are these horses just used to arena work or do they get out much?

I have a charcoal smoker and I use either hickory or mequite chips in it. Meat does taste so much better smoked. I did salmon in it one time and OMG was that heavenly!

Actually, most of them get out on the trail at least once a week. Really, Oliver was pretty well behaved all things considered.

I don’t like ribs when they’ve been marinated, but I LOVE them when they’ve had a seasoning rub on them. Yum yum.

I soak mine in apple juice prior to putting them in the smoker. It makes them tender. If you put a rub on them that contains salt before cooking them that causes to much of the juices to be lost. So I am told. Mine turn out pretty tender. I sprinkle them with spices when they are almost done.

Good afternoon.

111 degrees here at 2:00pm - today is supposed to be a record so I'm hoping the previous record was 110' - then we don't have to get any hotter.

Congratulations to Amy and Allison - Amy looks great :) I got my App Journal today and saw your friends colt. He's a beauty for sure.

Becky, that child is adorable - he really needs to be in commercials or something.

No fireworks here (thank goodness) so very quiet. From our driveway we can watch the fireworks in Virginia City without the noise :)

Didn’t you just have snow coming down a few days ago..geez, I thought the weather around here changed quick:)

Thanks, about JP:)

We have fireworks again tonight....I don’t know if it was the cause, but I just went out to feed, and Harley has a cut now too. Not as bad as Rocky’s was, but bad enough. It was still very much bleeding so I would say it just happened. Again no clue what he caught it on. It’s about an inch long, running straight up and down right above the coronet band. Of course it was getting dark faster then I could really get a good look. I got it cleaned, meds, and wrapped. I’ll have to get a better look at it tomorrow. I don’t think it’s serious....but, I don’t like how close it is to the coronet band.

When it rains it pours.

I'm sorry about Harley - curious what they are cutting themselves on isn't it? I had a filly one year (as a matter of fact, "E", the mare we gave Tracey) punture her rear leg just below her belly, all the way through. We never could figure out what she had don it on.

Does seem like we had snow just a few days ago :) It hit 113 finally, hopefully we will start cooling off a bit now.

Yikes... well at least you don’t have a ride next week you’re trying to prep for.

We’ve heard a couple booms... man... I really don’t want to deal with fireworks again tonight. I hope it’s just a couple.

Well what ever they cut themselves on it wasn’t the same thing...they stay in different pastures.

That’s what makes it a puzzle. The only thing we could figure out with E was maybe a weed (as in tumbleweed) broke off just right.

Well, you could always go looking for your merrymakers with a shotgun :)

I did have a mare slip a foal one time due to (I think) a nabor shooting bottle rockets into her pasture. I didn't know at the time that she would lose the foal but I did march down to his house that night and suggest that he find another place to set off fireworks or I'd be putting them through his front windows. That was back when I was much younger and a lot less tactful :)

If it goes on tonight I might just do that! They had their night. Enough.
