This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Good. I got a lot of house stuff done. We are having enchiladas for dinner. How’s yours?
Huh. Reminds me of the day I took Sarah Lee to the beach. She wanted to be the butt hugger though. Did you have good times too ?
Ribs and fried zucchini for dinner. In about an hour I'll go sit in the driveway and watch the fireworks in Virginia City.
Hi there.. I’d have stopped and turned around and said BACK THE $&@#! OFF!
But then, I’m in a bad mood... it’s just about dark on my least favorite night of the year ;~[
I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday.
Alison won Hi-point at the horse show. Instead of a trophy, they gave her a very cool shadow box with a Western theme. Her and Amy both won the trail classes, in their division. A large running horse poster and a horse door stop were the prizes. Nice change from a trophy. It was rather windy and threatening all day, but no rain. When I got home, it had rained a little. We had a good time at the show. Lots of our friends were there and brought all kinds of food.
Picture of Amy this time. On the left is Dakota and the right is Jason.
Our circle of tents and rigs. That is Dawn with the blond hair in front of the horse, Jason is riding. She is the owner of PJ. Amy's step-mom is in the blue and Amy's brother is in the red shirt. I don't know who the dude is on the left.
MT, Congrats on the nice show wins! I had a quiet uneventful 4th. Bathed dogs and horses and moved some hay up to the loft. Hubby had to work last night (busy night for the police dept) so we did not do anything to celebrate the 4th. Will probably smoke some ribs this weekend.
How did everyone make out last night with the fireworks. It was raining here, but people still set them off.
Only neighborhood kids shooting off a few roman candles and firecrackers. Horses did fine, the dogs were bothered more by them.
Good morning :~)
The only good thing I can say about the fireworks is they didn’t go as late as they sometimes have!
I still slept in... just woke up as poor ecurbh was leaving for work.
The horses were doing OK until there was some kind of multiple explosion thing very close that was both loud and bright and one fired right after another for 10 or more? The ones that don’t stop are the ones that get them edgy... it just kept going... They started running in the dark and it was a little while before I could grab Bay as he ran by. Once he stopped we could get ahold of the others and we stood out there till that neighbor was done... maybe an hour. If we hold them and we stay quiet, they stay quiet. The key is not letting them get their momentum up.
The dogs were pretty drunk... just not having a particularly fun drunk.
Now I need some coffee.
Our day yesterday was very nice. I slept most of the day:). In the evening we went down to Charlie's to watch JP blow fireworks, Jenny went to her in-laws this year. Turns out JP didn't really like the loud stuff either, he walked around most of the night with his hands over his ears. He did like dropping smoke bombs into a tube of water...who would have guess they would work underwater.
He liked sparkers too, and surprisingly enough, Cocoa, Kristy's German Shepherd, liked the fireworks too...any that were thrown she would try to pick up...yikes...luckily she always dropped them before they exploded.
She snapped at every underwater cracker that Charlie threw in the tub.
I don't know how my horses and dogs did last night, don't know how much was being shot off here, but everyone seemed fine when I got home.
Becky
Gidget would be like that shepherd... if she could... she’d go get them.
You know those bright things that zip around on the ground? They work underwater too... not sure what they’re called, but we used to toss them in the lake.
Charlie tossed one of those in the tub too:). I think they tried everything underwater, JP seemed to like it in the water:)
Cocoa made me really nervous picking up the crackers...she’d immediately drop them, but I don’t know what kind of damage it would have done to her if it had gone off just as she picked it up. I do’t know if she was doing it because she liked or disliked them, hard to tell.
Becky
Yeah - I can’t tell when Gidget barks if she likes or hates them either.
Wow... she's really something! :~) Congratulations to them both. :~)
We wondered if, last night, we could have recorded the sound level with the camera. It really was something... We could hear the big display in town, and a constant rumble of all the homes on Black lake. And then the closer neighbors, it was just a constant roar from 10 till about 11:30.
I wondered how that compared to other places. It seems like a lot to me, but I don’t know what it’s like elsewhere.
That’s pretty much how it is around here. You can hear the explosions that are pretty distant. Sounds like thunder rolling across the sky. And down at Charlie’s the neighbors on both sides of their property....wow....they had some really really big stuff and a lot of it. Some of it seemed to me almost commercial level. You could also see the flashes in the sky, even if you could not see the displays because they were so far away or hills in the way.
There were some neighbors shooting off fireworks, but nothing real bad. Didn't seem to bother the dogs and Lugar is gun shy. The horses were in the barn, so I doubt they were effected.
Here too... I just wonder how much they spend on that stuff?
