The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I guess because Blue and Belle are fairly close in age, Blue thinks Belle is his own chew toy. Belle just jumps all over him and he taks it :)

Well, I just finished breakfast a little while ago :) scrambled eggs and sausage. I think we’ll grill a rack of ribs later today.

Mosquitoes are too bad to BBQ right now and I don’t want to mess up the kitchen. I’ve been craving a hot dog though. I’ve got some fat free weiners in the frig but....I think I’ll get my husband to stop at sonic and get me a Coney. Maybe even a foot long:’)

That sounds good. There is a Der Weinersnitzle in Carson City and every once in awhile, a good old mustard dog sounds so good I have to stop and get one :)

There is one in Corpus Christi (about 2 hours from here) I stop there sometimes when traveling.

Ribs for us too!

Choirmaster and his wife are coming over to cook out with us. Baby back ribs with my dad's secret sauce, corn on the cob, garlic bread, baked beans, salad, and they're bringing dessert!

Not a good day for Weight Watchers.

I haven’t decided yet what we’re having besides ribs although I think I’ve got squash in the garden ready to pick.

Squash is always good. We have a family recipe for crookneck yellow squash - - butter and bread crumbs and run it under the broiler. It’s real good that way. Also have a good recipe for squash casserole.

I’m thinking about slicing it longways and brushing it with olive oil and putting it on the grill. Probably will fry it with onions and butter though, that’s the way Bob likes it best.

Yum! Maybe you could do it like bruschetta -- brush it with olive oil, then add some chopped garlic and onion and maybe some shredded red peppers and basil . . . .

. . . I love cooking Italian almost as much as I love cooking Southern, but the Fourth is a traditional Southern Barbeque day, so the menu is fixed! About the only thing that ever varies is what's in the salad and what shows up for dessert. I think home-made peppermint icecream is best . . . .

No dessert here - hubby is diabetic and overweight and unable to control a sugar tooth - therefore, no desserts :)

Not even fresh fruit? < sob >

Splenda has been a big help to me on Weight Watchers . . . . have it in my tea every morning instead of sugar, and cook with it i.o. sugar.

I have Splenda and hubby uses that on his cold cereal when he eats that. I do always have fresh fruit in the house.

If I hadn’t joined, I wouldn’t be typing flaming responses and upsetting everyone

Well some of those people are just... special. I know that if I joined I would probably get banned right quick. Some of them blow my mind.

I hope that everyone is having a safe and happy 4th. Went on that trail ride today with about 4 or 5 other people. I wanted to get pictures, but I had a heck of a time with a fractious and upset horse, so it was both hands on the reins at all times. It wasn’t his fault, he had a horse on his butt the whole time that he didn’t really know. So close that the other horse’s nose was over his rump most of the time. I asked the other person to please back off, but no dice, and the trail was so narrow that we couldn’t really switch places, and the horse in front of me would have kicked the crap out of the other horse if she went in front of me instead. Oliver wanted to trot most of the time, and was tossing his head, threatening to buck, and sweating buckets. I kept him to a nice slow western jog most of the time... that seemed to relax him because in his head he thought that he was getting away from the other horse. I would have never have let him keep trotting otherwise, but it seemed the best thing to do at the time... I went out with him on Sunday and it was like two completely different horses. Totally not like him at all.

:) Yes, they are "special"

Poor Oliver. My mare hated someone right on her rear end. Probably the person behind you couldn't control their horse well enough to stay off.

Have a good 4th too.
