The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Huh - glad we haven’t had raccoons here... probably the dogs keep them wary. I’d have feared for the cats... interesting that yours didn’t seem to tangle with it.

Well, whose trailer is part of the question... We don’t have our truck. I left it at the beach house till the weekend. I ~might~ be able to go get it, but not sure, they might still need it. Bob said he’d come to get me, but I don’t know if I want to put Bay in with Barney... IF I go, I’d rather drive myself.

Good morning :) How did things go at the beach yesterday?

It looks like Jossey will not get as white as her mom, hard to say though.

Day she was born -

About 6mos old -

About 7-8 mos old here -

LOL - you’re smarter than I was. If I hadn’t joined, I wouldn’t be typing flaming responses and upsetting everyone.

When Tracey emailed me she said she was very laid back about the whole thing, including letting Tracey put weight in one stirrup. Tracey is just proud as can be of her, said she was the most willing, smartest horse she’d ever worked with. She could be a bit prejudiced :)

Oh man, I’m sorry about the teeth. That is just so miserable to deal with. Sorry about Harley’s shoe loss too but it’s going to be a few days before you’re feeling strong enough to ride anyway.

Her dam is the half arab mare, out of the Egyptian Arab.

She does have that sensible look in her eye.

The older I get, the more I like a calm horse! Gracie was like that, we saddled her up and rode her off, she was 14 years old and had never looked through a bridle.

How are the puppies? I bet Belle is ruling the roost, isn't she?

Latest pic of the Insane Ruby:

She's trying to "kill" the bumper before bringing it back. Doesn't mind putting her whole head under.

Thanks for posting that... she’s done such a major change... in a sense, it’s too bad she’s lost the contrast of that pretty blanket... but she’s matured into a beautiful horse :~)

Ruby looks like she just loves the water. I need to get off my rear and take some pictures of Belle and Blue for you. It looks to me like Belle will end up bigger than Blue - she is growing like a weed. Bob needs to get both of them to water too - they do a lot of running in the desert but lakes are a little hard to come by :)

She inherited the arab greying gene from her mom but I don't think she'll ever get as white as her mom. I am guessing that if she were blanketed she'd be darker, more of a steel grey.

We were out looking at Lacey yesterday, she's getting black spots/tics ??? and BamBam has some gold spots - then Slick has that big blood spot and roaning. Got some weird and unusual coloring going on out there :)

When she was little, Ruby was a bit hesitant about the water, especially the salty stuff that moves up and down!

But this last time when we took her to the club meeting, she never hesitated -- she was in the water like a shot. She swims in incredibly splashy fashion getting TO the bumper, but returning she swims smoothly and with all four feet, using her tail as a rudder.

Going . . .

Coming . . .

She looks like she is having such a ball there. Probably splashes alot going out ‘cause she’s in a hurry :)

I think she's also pulling her forehand up out of the water to SEE (through all that splashing).

She does enjoy herself tremendously. She boarded at our trainers this past weekend, and Tim took me aside and said, "You want some free advice?" I said sure, and he said, "This dog is a field trialer's dream - she wants to go far, and she wants to go fast, and she wants to go NOW. But you gotta get a handle on her." Apparently she was VERY naughty at the trainers!

So we started collar conditioning as soon as she got home . . . Tim said I needed to use "Thump Therapy" but a high 1 or low 2 on the collar worked pretty well. I think she was just trying them on to see what she could get away with.

Interesting - it could be she was just conning them, what’s her behavior like most of the time at home. Realizing of course, puppies are just generally out of control some of the time (I think their brains don’t fire right :) )

She minds me, doesn’t mind anybody else (she bonded to me tight as a tick from the start - after all, I rescued her from the belly of a 737!) She’ll mind my husband if he barks at her, but the kids might as well not be there.

I'm afraid she's a Bumptious Youth. She pushes Shelley around too, until Shelley has had enough, then she barks at her (and sometimes snaps at her muzzle) and Ruby cringes and runs crying to mama, "Big Sister was mean to me again!"

Shelley is a cheerful soul who will obey anybody. She'll even run agility or retrieve for a total stranger, as long as I tell her first it's O.K.
