The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It was a visit:) I’m thankful that Jenny, Blake and Tucker went with me.

Our weather is suppose to be clear this whole week. Julia is suppose to come ride with me tomorrow:)...I’ll be sure to get pictures of her new horse.

I just came in from feeding, Rock has hurt himself. My first clue was blood all over the ground in his pen...I can’t find what he got caught on but he has a big cut right above a front hoof. I’m going to let him finish eating then I’ll doctor...he’s very lame:( I won’t know how serious till I take a close look.

Pictures are loading. It’s not a serious cut. It’s just going to be hard to keep dry and clean, and in an area where proud flesh is prone to grow. It will have to be doctored at least once a day, depending on how well I can keep a wrap on it. I think I should wrap it at least for a few days.

I’m going to be heading to the vet to pick up a tetanus shot, I haven’t given him any yet this year.

You know when I was taking pictures I thought about you, and the wound on one of your horses you were doctoring, and showing monthly pictures. We haven’t seen one in a long time. I’m assuming it healed, just wondering if it scared???

I used a diaper, then some vet wrap and then some duck tape. Stan at the feed store said his vet recommends mixing DMSO with furizone, smearing that on some saran wrap, and wrapping the cut with that, then padding, then wrap, and only changing it every 2-3 days. I'm going to check it tonight and see how we are doing, then decide the how I will proceed. I've always had very good luck with cut heal, my questions is always to wrap or not to wrap:)

Stuff I’ve read recently said Furazone shouldn’t be used below the knee because of proud flesh, but I’ll let Frog speak to that, she did good with her bad one. It’s probably good that it bled alot, for cleaning it out.

Let me know if it stays on with the diaper and all... I think I’d have just put gauze on the cut and vet wrapped it up and down around the heel bulb. Duct tape around the bottom. But then I don’t have emergency access to diapers! That looks cozy, and you don’t have to worry so much about it being too tight.

He’s lame on it? Wonder what he did. Edge of the metal building maybe? Where did you find the blood?

Since he was due for his tetanus, I went ahead and gave him both kinds to be on the safe side. I figured that’s what I needed to do, but asked the vet and he concurred. Diapers make great padding, as they pull moisture away, they have the sticky tabs to help hold it, till the vet wrap goes around, and I have some around:)

I found the blood at first in his pen, a big spot like where he stood for awhile, then some smaller ones in front of his stall. When I walked out in the pasture to give him his shots, I found some spots out there also, but not enough to follow to maybe lead to what ever did it. I can’t find anything in his run that he could have hung up on. So I really don’t know. I’m going to walk his pasture later when I get back from riding and see if I have a wire down some where. There shouldn’t be The only wire fence I have is the perimeter, and a quick check of it, it looks fine.

I didn’t know that about furizone and proud flesh...I’m pretty sure I’ll stick to cut heal, I’ve doctored a lot with it, and I’ve never had a problem with pround flesh. It’s just the wrapping I’m never sure of.

Yeah, there’s a scar there that’s about an inch and a half in diameter and there’s a knot on the cannon bone, but there’s no lameness from it and it’s not all that noticeable. So that’s not too bad considering how awful it looked and how big it was to start with. I’ll try to get a picture of it this evening.

Looks like you did a good job. I would have wrapped it with a diaper too if that’s what I had on hand, and vet wrapped it. Diapers are wonderful things for wrapping. I use them for poultices on feet too. Handy! I’m sorry that he cut himself though, it’s amazing what mysterious things that they can find to hurt themselves on.

Diapers are great for abcesses, and sole injuries. Their foot just fits inside the diaper, and the tabs can be wrapped around the pastern, very neat. This was a bit more awkward since I put it on sidewise, but it worked, and I didn’t have to worry about getting it too tight.

Hi everyone, I'm not trying to steer you all away from what Becky has going on, but here are the videos that I promised you. In one my trainer is telling me to sit up! Sit up! Sit up! and then in another one is something hilarious she says about doing a Dolly Parton impression. I always have a strong tendency to lean forward when I ride at the trot and canter, but I don't care if you folks see my faults. Letting my stirrups down a couple of holes will probably fix this, they were short to begin with.

I’m surprised she didn’t notice and correct your stirrups, because that in itself would tend to tip you forward.

I never used Nitrofurazone on Bob's cut, but mostly because it just melted and ran off. I hadn't heard about it causing proud flesh below the knee either. What I used was Granulex, along with hosing it off and debriding, twice a day. But if you've had good luck with Cut Heal then I'm sure it'll work just as well. If you haven't already, you really should shave all the hair off around the cut. I don't know why, but hair hanging in a wound really seems to cause infection. Keeping it wrapped is probably a good idea for a nice clean cut like that. It'll keep the dirt out. It looks big enough to need some stiches, but I've never had any luck with stitches holding on lower legs like that so I don't know that I'd bother with them. Hope cut herself like that really bad on the left front ankle bone when she was a 8 or 10 months old and I had it stitched, but they pulled out after just a few days. It was a real wet muddy spring and she was constantly wading in mud so even a bandage didn't help. But it healed down to a really tiny scar that you'd have to part the hair to see, so I'm sure that Rock will do the same.

It IS aggravating trying to figure out what they cut themselves on too. It does look like a metal cut, or maybe a nail, but you'll probably never know. ~:-/

Hey, I’m glad you posted your videos, I’ll have them load while I’m out riding.

Harley...I can see him out the window next to where the computer is, every time he starts to pause, I holler “QUIT IT” he stops and looks around, like where is she:)..It’s kind of funny:)

Julia was suppose to be here at 10, she called and said she’d be about 30 minutes late...probably waiting on her trank to kick in:)...Last night when she called and I said 10 she wanted to go earlier because of the heat...now she’s late...I swear people make me looney:) She’s got till 11, and I’m out of here.
