The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh it does look sloppy... but still warm I take it, Celia’s in short sleeves. Did it help at all with horses staying cool or was there no bright side at all? ;~)

Did you take any more pics? :~)

Sat it was very humid, Sun. was cold, and windy.

Very few of the horses had any problems with the P&R’s probably because it was cool even on Sat, they only broke sweat just a few times, for short periods, then the wind would come and cool them off.

I have some more pictures, nothing really interesting, IMO, camp pictures, a few of some other horses...I hated to take up space for stuff that probably wouldn’t mean much to you all.

Well, if there’s others please post ‘em... You can tell us what they mean... not much else going on :~)

I may lunge Bay... it’s been so long since he’s been worked. Over a week? It’s going to be beautiful all week, after a rather grey and cool three day weekend. We’re going to work today though, on tightening the paddock fence. We don’t want to go up in the woods till all the tourists go home :~)

Good morning.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't place although, personally I think you both did great, considering the weather and the mud. Any of our horses would have said "not in this lifetime" to those trails (well, so would I have).

Harley is looking great by the way. It's hard to believe that horse is 36yrs old isn't it? He looks outstanding. I'd hazard a guess that he and his rider have been doing this for years and are both in top condition.

I'd love to see more pictures.

I don't even like going to the horse parks on any weekend because of all the people. I can imagine what a holiday weekend would be like. I wouldn't go either.

Here's a few more pictures. This is where we crossed a dam. There was lake on both sides, the far side was really steep and way down....I don't like riding across this place:).

You can't really tell from this picture, but this is overlooking a canyon that is called Horseshoe Canyon because of it's shape. It's pretty far down too.

Walking thru camp after a ride meeting.

Another camp picture. There really weren't all that many riders there. I think gas prices kept a lot of people from coming. I think the ride started with 42, and finished with 36.

A new horse that a friend of mine picked up from the trainer this weekend. He's a Missouri Foxtrotter, which is a fairly popular breed in this region. The lady whose horse this is is watching the trainer she sent him to lunge him. From my observation it takes a very confident rider to handle this breed...They are mostly rode by men, and trainers. They seem a pretty hot breed.

Well, I’m not going thru mud like that anymore, but was very pleased at how Harley handled it. He was still doing 4mph even in the mud.

Yeah, I think Elmer and Marianne have been competing since....well, maybe since Columbus came over on the Mayflower:) They are both pretty incredible.

All the pictures are great :) but I can’t help thinking as I look at them - SNAKES. Guess it’s a carryover from my years in Alabama and North Carolina. Green and wet = snakes that don’t slither away (like my rattlesnakes do).

I love those pictures of the scenery... this is all on a private ranch? I’d love to own all that. It looks very pretty.

RE the dam... well, at least the landing at the bottom is soft ;~)

How did the foxtrotter do? I’ve been wondering about gaiteds in these kinds of competitions. It would seem right up their alley.

You guys make a good crew - want to come straighten up my fence line? It doesn't need to be mowed :)

I'm sorry to hear about Kat. I hope it's nothing serious.

I hope Kat’s OK too... I’m a little worried if he went away for the weekend, what happened with her. His farm sitter is good, very skilled if she got worse, but still... I hope she didn’t end up with an abscess or something that needed attention.

I’m wondering if maybe she has the beginnings of navicular where she is sound for light riding, etc. but can’t handle circles like lunging without lameness. Or possibly arthritis. My first bet though would be navicular. If that’s the case she should be fine for a child’s light riding and trails, just not hard pounding work or lunging.

She does have some arthritis. I could see it in her hocks. Navicular wouldn’t surprise me.

When she went lame, it seemed to be very acute on one side, sharper than an arthritis symptom. In addition to maybe working her a bit hard for a first time out, she either bruised or pulled something.

And you’re right. From here on out shouldn’t really need to be lunged.

I’ve forgotten why you didn’t use her when Becky was out? Was she lame then too? Navicular is something that can be handled with proper shoeing and no hard work - at least for a long time. Of course, arthritis can be too, and exercise is generally helpful there.

A week before Becky came out Tiff said she was running in the pasture, slipped and fell, and she thought, hurt her shoulder. She was better by the time we needed to make a decision, but we decided Mia was a better choice to be sure.

Okay. She’s at an age where she’s going to start developing small problems - hopefully all will be well soon.

True. I’m hoping when Bob calls, he calls with good news. Then we’ll go down and go for a short ride in his pasture and maybe down the road. She’s got some separation issues going on with that pony of theirs that I’d like to work on before Jessie gets on.
