The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

So how’d the ride go?

Pony’s okay I think... he sedated her (had to sedate her to even take her temp so she wasn’t feeling too bad) banimined her, tubed her with both mineral oil and water, and now she’s in a temp corral in the front yard nibbling a little grass.

Whew! That’s good to hear! We can’t go losing our SaddleClub Pony Mascot.

So what was she doing this morning that alerted you that she was having a problem?

So glad to hear it. You know when horses are where you see them all the time, I think you can catch these things and get them stopped before they get real bad.

So what happened, what did she do, any idea what caused it?

The ride was fine, could have been better, but we did OK. You know the more I think about it the more I’m thinking part of the problem now that he is use to the sponge is Harley has never really liked standing still in water. Today it seemed he was more anxious about getting out of the water then he was scared of the sponge. I threw the sponge in 3 times and pulled it back in and sponged him off. I really don’t think that was the problem as much as he just wanted out of the water. But we ended it pretty good. Next time I’m going to take him in the water and see how well he will stand before throwing the sponge. I didn’t give him much of chance to do that before I started with the sponge.

When it’s really hot and he’s hot,he’ll stand there some, but thinking back I think he’s always got antsy standing around in the water.

I’m not going to worry about having him ready with this trick for this ride. I don’t want to rush it, but I will be working on it once this is over till we both get comforatable with it. Thanks for all the encouragment with it, I’ll keep you updated with our progress.

Becky

They may have been without good water all night. One trough was full, but when I looked at it there was kindof a slime in it. Maybe a bird pooped in it or something? And the other one was empty.

She came out of the barn first after morning grain (she may not have eaten her grain at all, she came out too soon... can't know for sure though, because the other horses ate it if she didn't)

Anyway, I was emptying out in filling the water troughs and she came and drank a good long drink like she was really thirsty, and then she immediately felt really bad. She groaned and rolled and got up and was standing really funny and quivering, and her belly was all tight... she rolled again and bit her belly and such and I went and hollered for ecurbh to bring her halter.

Here she is after we caught her... you can see her abdomen is tight, for whatever else it shows.

Our vet was on his way to an emergency that was going to need surgery, so he told me to call another vet.... The vet I used to use before him, so he knew where we were.

She’s ok now we hope... If she doesn’t relapse when the Banamine wears off.

She’s really hungry. I’ve put her back in the paddock with the other horses now, keeping her in the yard, I was concerned that grass was too rich. She’s got access to a little bit of hay on the ground, I really don’t want her to eat too much, I’m watching her and wondering if I need to rake that up.

I’ve heard of horses colicing on water like that when they’re real thirsty and drink too much. I don’t know why it does them like that though. I wonder if it has to do with how cold the water is, or if it’s just too much in their stomach at one time.

One guy had a new horse that wouldn’t drink his tap water, for like days, and when it finally got thirsty enough to drink they let it drink too much and it colicked and died. It must’ve rolled and twisted a gut or something. I’m glad Pony turned out ok. She’ll probably be fine by the time tha Banamine wears off coz the water will be gone by then.

I don’t think that a little bit of hay will hurt her. It’s good that she feels good enough to eat. Now grain I definately wouldn’t do for a while. But the hay may help her gut move things on along. She’s gonna have a really greasy butt for a day or so anyways.

We put up a tape fence so they can’t all get to most of the fresh hay I put out this morning, just one of the piles... so with the other horses running her off of it and pacing around (since she’s in, they’re in too) I’m hoping they’re keeping her moving enough to not eat ~too~ much.

Well, I've done it to myself, back in the day when I was known to party too much ;~), I'd wake up a little hung over and dehydrated, and a big glass of ice water sounds really good, but if I drank it too fast, bleeeech - it would come right back up.

That’s a good observation about Harley not liking to stand in water. That would definately contribute to the sponge problem. At least now you know to break it down into two different things to work on. Mine are such water dogs that I have a problem keeping them OUT of the water. They’ll stand there and splash and paw in it as long as I’ll let them. Now mud holes are an entirely different story. They HATE those.

And the movement is bound to do her good too, just to keep things working along.

Re sponge progress... I think Cyn gets a little unnerved in water too... she doesn’t want to hang out and stand still... she’ll go in, but she’d like to keep moving and would be hard to stop in the creek most times, even to try to offer her a drink.

I wouldn't worry about it if she feels good enough to eat it. Like Frog said, I think it would help her, but grain and grass I would do away with for a couple of days. She might have a small relapse later in the evening, so be on the lookout.
