The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We like it a lot too:) House is hilarious, and we loved what he did to Wilson. I pretty much like all the characters in that show.

Great pictures, looks like a lovely day. Glad the shoes are working so well, I had gotten the impression you weren’t to sold on them. Do you think it has changed his stride?

I don’t think he’s a lot different in his stride... But I know he feels good. He might have felt just as good in the old shoes, but I do think these are better for the long term.

I’m really optimistic that maybe my time with him is not as limited as I have feared in the past. He’s really doing well.

Yikes. I’m sorry. I sure hope you don’t have any of those tornados anywhere near. The recent pics are just awful.

I was looking at Texas weather just now. You have a wicked looking line coming across. Funny about here. It’s like a fan on top of us. Rain can be all around and we set dry.

Good Morning.

You Westerns stay safe. Still very nice here and temps are going to be in the low 80's.

My trailer is suppose to be done next Tuesday and I am excited! Kids are taking Alison to the All American Youth Show in Columbus next week, leaving on Weds. Now, to figure out a plan to continue going further South to pick up the trailer.

I had a nice moment yesterday with my old A-Rab horse. Shortly before the falls, right after the bridge, I decided to get off and walk again, for exercise. I should have done it sooner, it’s only a half mile or so to the falls from there... Oh well, I didn’t think of it soon enough.

But the moment happened when I was dismounting. I dismount by swinging my right leg over, standing there while I kick out of the left stirrup, then hop down. when I was half off like that, I inadvertently pushed down on the quick release snap for the water bottle holder and it fell down unexpectedly, and landed leaning right on Bay’s foot. It was a water bottle full of ice and water, so it made a rattling sound, and it was cold. He just stood there, didn’t move a muscle, though his eyes were wide as saucers. Something like that, had I not been in a precarious position, he’d have jumped back, snorting... but he took care of me. He’s come a long way in 16 years since we first met. :~)

Isn't it sweet when they show that they care for you?

Best Gracie example: we were out hunting and had just cleared a pretty good size stone wall and were cantering up a moderate grassy slope, minding our own business, when she hit a muddy patch and her feet just SHOT out from under her and she fell, HARD. Landed on her right side and knocked the wind out of herself - I just rolled off her left shoulder and up onto my hands and knees. She started to get up in a big hurry (her eyes were like you say, big as saucers), but then she caught herself, stopped, and slewed her head around to look at me and make sure I wasn't in range of her feet.

I stepped over to her head, rubbed her ears, held her for a moment and then said, "OK, girl, get up." Only then did she stick out her front feet and scramble up. Loosened her girth and led her back and forth for a couple of minutes, jumped back on and walked and trotted her, she was just fine. On with the hunt! (we took the wimp routes thereafter, though, I didn't want her stressed.)

Finally took the camera to the stable!

All dressed up and ready to go.

A pretty good shoulder-in for a couple of old ladies.

Pretty good 10m circle, but my reins could be shorter.

This is what happens when your trainer isn't familiar with your camera!

A little better.

Good girl!

I heard about a horse abuse case today in the next town up the road from Bixby. Debbie, the girl I feed for this winter, called and told me about it, sounds really bad. She was called to come and help haul horses away from this place.

Several horses had not been out of their stalls in 3 years, one had a broken leg, one had an untreated cut that had grown so much proud flesh it looked like extra legs. These two are going to be put down.

The stalls hadn’t been cleaned either in that length of time, it took over 30 minutes to dig one out he was sunk in so much.

Several were very thin, and several of the ones that were outside were in pretty good shape. 13 in all were hauled off, QH’s and Paints. The owner pulled up in a brand new Chevy pickup, dressed very nicely as they were loading horses. The police showed up shortly afterwards, cuffed and stuffed her and took her to jail. Yeah!!!

I don’t even like think about such stuff...

Dang!

I hate it when people neglect horses like that. Why not at least turn the poor things out?

And WHY didn't anybody do anything about this for 2-3 years? Why didn't somebody find out sooner?

I'm glad they hauled the owner off to jail, and I hope she goes to prison.

Ah man... I hate to hear about that stuff too. At least maybe the horses that live can have some relief.

Good pictures AAM.... that delay on digitals is a killer on jumping pictures :~) I know... I’ve taken a lot of them.

My husband tells me (NOW he tells me) that pressing the shutter release half way will engage the autofocus, and then the shutter actually trips as soon as you press the button the rest of the way (or pretty close).

I wish Leica would develop a digital back for the M-3!!!!!

Good Morning.

Nice pictures, AMM. Sure looks like a lot of leather on that horse's head. Each piece serves it purpose, I imagine. How old is she?

Oh wow Becky, I sure hate to hear about those horses. What will be her excuse? "Someone else was suppose to be taking care of them". Terrible shame.

There will be a delay on my trailer, with the cushions, but hopefully by next Weds, they will be in.

A little rain last night and the sun is out now.
