The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It’s a puzzle but I have been sorta thinking we have our own soap opera there. Definately interesting and entertaining.

Yeah, it's been kinda fun to sit back and watch unfold. *g*

I can't help but think of a situation in a family close to me where two cousins decided they were in love. She left her husband and kids and moved to TX to live with her cousin, the new love of her life.

Our warning to them was 'had they really thought it through'. If things don't work out, it has the potential to split the family in two -- even pitting their fathers, (who were brothers) one against the other.

We were "demonized" for not supporting the lovely couple.

Well, they didn't last .. and now the family is divided. Who did who wrong? bla bla bla.

I thought it similar because when Epona and WF 'came out' .. it caused a stir in our 'internet horse.com family'.. And if it doesn't work out, people are going to take sides and .. well ..... you get the picture!

They are all grown up and can do what they want, but by involving everyone on the internet in their love affair, it does open them up to a certain amount of scrutiny .. right or wrong, huh?

Is that the big horse event that they have at Expo square? I know it’s coming up because the city just annexed the fairgrounds and now folks are going to have to pay the higher city prices there instead of the lower county taxes.

The news was interviewing horse owners to see what their thoughts were about the tax situation.

Good Morning.

Bodie and Jody both received their shots yesterday. A local vet comes to the fairgrounds and gives a discount to 4-H'ers or anyone else wanted shots. Quite a bit of savings of only $88 for two. That is for the EEE/WEE, rabies and West Nile. The fairgrounds is only about 2 miles away, so that made it all the more convenient.

Another beautiful day today. Tomorrow, one of the larger greenhouses is holding their spring open house. Huge place with over 22 houses. Last year, I missed it and am planning on going tomorrow. Early, so I can see the Derby.

Yeah, I’ve heard all about that, and that is what I’m wondering if this is the event that brought all that on. I hope so:)

That is a good price. I spent $96 dollars last week getting vaccines. It was the first time tho that I gave the West Nile, so I had to get the booster also to give in 4 weeks.

What are her plans for Tuffy? Halter, Pleasure? Have you been to the Nationals? The 25th anniversary was held in Columbus, Oh some time ago and I attended. Also, the one in Syracuse, NY. What an awesome site to see. He’s a great horse and that is wonderful, she feels he will be able to compete with the best in the Nation!

Yes, you do and now I am wondering why they didn't get the shots. The vet's writing is so bad, it is hard to understand, just what she wrote down on the slip. That is what I get for not going. Kids just don't ask enough questions. I will have to call. Maybe, it was not such a bargain after all.

Sorry for the delay...dang work. Judged pleasure trail rides are trail rides on well marked paths, terrain that have obstacle stations with judges. The only one I went on had 10 stations and they are usually not “hard core” trail obstacles but fun and reasonably simple things.

For instance it was Fall so was a Halloween theme. Had to take the witches cape from one stick figure witch and put it on another. Had to walk over some cavaletti with “ghosts” that were white kitchen garbage bags in the tree branches overhead.

Horse is judged on manners and rider is judged on horsemanship skills. It’s just a really nice way to spend a day with some friends and horses. Most of em were laughing a lot but I did more grimacing. A friend had lent me one of her horses to ride proudly telling me he had placed 2nd in the arabian division the prior year. What she failed to tell me was that the 26 year old coot hadn’t been ridden in the year since. Needless to say he wasn’t 2nd when I rode him!

That sounds exactly like the CTR’s I go on. I was only asking because I was wondering if you knew you cannot put your horse in the trailer. They have to be tied to the trailer, or I believe you are disqualified. All horses are required to be stabled the same.

According to what my vet told me, you only have to do the booster shot the first year, after that it is a once a year shot. Did your horses get the WN last year? If so they won’t need the second one this year.

I don’t believe there are any similar rules with these trail rides. They’re very causual. Some are even held at places where folks ride the horses to the event and then just enter and go.

After the ride they ride home and then come back for the picnic dinner and prizes.

Oh, then it’s something different. Sounds like fun tho:) Being judged like that, adds some spice and purpose to riding.

These rides may just be local fun-type things and not NATRC sponsored events because she didn’t mention a time element. It sounds like fun in any case. They have trail-obstacle classes in the big Racking Horse Celebration shows that they have twice a year. Of course they’re not out on trails, and the obstacles aren’t as fun as cjshapi’s sounded. They just set up obstacles in the ring. But they’re fun to watch anyways.

...only $88 for two. That is for the EEE/WEE, rabies and West Nile...

That's not a bad price. Around here you'd pay about $20 a piece for the EEE/WEE, Rabies and West Nile, and that's just for single shots. So that'd be $120 for 2 horses for those 3 shots, so $88 bucks for all that ain't a bad deal at all.

Just wondered if anyone else is planning on watching the Derby? I have to admit I missed Barbaro winning last year due to my own horsey obligations. Did see the heartbreaking Preakness and was glued to his story until the end.

For some reason that horse brings me to tears every time I think about him. I don’t think I can watch this year because he’s going to be such a big part of the broadcast. I just don’t feel like blubbering for 90 minutes.
