The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Back from my walk.

Mack’s weight loss is an incredible accomplishment!! People that feel the need to say something negative about him are just jealous. They have to put his weight loss down to make them feel better about themselves. Just human nature.

A few years ago I got down to 100 pounds, with the help of ma huang, but I can’t do that anymore. I have heart problems now and it’s probably because of all those diet pills I took. People kept telling me I looked like a holocaust victim but to be honest I loved being that thin.

My husband seems to enjoy my changing looks. He loved it when I was 175 pounds and 9 months pregnant but that might put him in the weirdo catagory. He didn’t like it when I was 100 pounds, though.

I’ve not seen him ride, ever.... or his horse, because we don’t get that cool channel you guys all get! I wish we did.

Good morning everyone!

Well, we were gonna go on a ride today, but now I don’t think so. We’ve been asked to go pick up Bob’s new horse this afternoon/evening... and between that and other work we need to do, I don’t think there’s time. Weather’s iffy the rest of the week.... we’ll see how it goes. Friday is Alpaca hauling for the spring fair.

Don’t cut your arm off, you might need it later...

I need to drink more water, I don’t drink enough. I like ice tea and diet cokes. I also eat lots of baby carrots and grapes during the day. Keeps me satisfied.

I’ve had weird weighing days so I’m trying to stay off the scale more than once a week. It really messes with my head and ruins my day sometimes.

I’ve bought more clothes the last 3 weeks than I have the last 8 years. I threw out all of my old lady flats and bought a bunch of 3 inch heels. I feel a mid-life crisis coming on....

Well, I’ve finished my desk work here now, I’ve got to clean the kitchen, then I’m off to work Harley:)..going to start the ground exercise to work on lunging him with body language. That would be sooo cool at a CTR:)

I’ve got to take him to the vet at 2:00, so I’m not sure how much riding I will do, once I’m back from the vet, I’ve got to go to the grocery store, the cupboard is bare.

I munch on almonds...they are really very healthy, have lots of calcium, and good fats. They keep me satisfied.

I’m afraid not to weigh every day...I know my system, it can get way out of control very very fast. I only weight 1st thing in the morning, once I get my coffee made and start drinking and eating, I don’t weigh again, that messes with me, one cup of coffee can put 2 lbs on me:(.

I bought some capri pants a few weeks ago...I haven’t ever had capri pants, but with the weight loss and the tanning beds...I finally felt I could carry them off OK:). Kind of fun to wear something besides jeans and T shirts:)

Hmmmm capri’s. I’ve never worn them, maybe it’s time to try.

I had several outfits in my closet that I haven’t worn in years, they were way too tight. I can wear them now. I’m so glad I didn’t toss them out.

I think Lester over on the horse.com forum is Sonny in drag.

Really? That’s too funny. Sheesh, I hate people that think they are always right and their way is the only way to do things. Lots of people in the horse industry with that attitude but I’ve noticed the worst offenders are often recent owners, like 10 years or less.

LOL...I’ll try. But since it’s all done with body language, and pointing...he just points at their hip and the horse disengages and turns...it’s incredible. And the problem horse was doing it after just one lesson on the lunge line...I’m hoping but not expecting it to go that easy for me, just because I’m afraid it takes a lot of learned cordination, to work the line, the stick and point all at the same time till they learn to do it with just a point:)

Well, I can’t take pictures. I’ll get Mack to take some one evening when he is home.

But Harley caught on great. In just a matter of minutes he was catching that when I slid to the side, sort of squatted and pointed at his hip, he disengaged his hindquarters, turned an faced me. To get him to go the other direction I pointed then squatted looking at his other hip...hard to describe. And the more often I changed directions the slower and steadier his pace got...

CA said to get a horse that wants to speed up as he goes along at a gait, to do lots of transitions. Don’t let them go for great lengths without changing pace, trot, walk, canter, walk, canter, trot, walk, canter, walk, trot...get it:).

I’d love it if you can take pictures at critical points, since I can’t watch on TV.

Hey all, I had some laser work done on my eyes, so I am pretty blurred right now, but am trying to get caught up. It will be a few days, before I can see clear again. I hope everyone is well.

Yeah, I know what you mean, and I will get Mack to take pictures.

But I do need to tell you, I’m not nearly as smooth at it as he is....sometimes I’d forget to point to change directions, sometimes I know I probably looked like I need to head to the bathroom the way I was squatting....LOL...but Harley understood.

Let me explain the theory...Horses view us as predators. So when you want them to be still, you don’t look at them you stand straight and relaxed, but when you want them to go , you assume a predatory position, hence the squatting and staring at their hip, to get them to move their hip. As soon as they start moving you stand straight. The cues are, you point in the direction you want them to go with the line in that hand. The lunge whip is in your other hand. After you point in the direction you want them to go you sort squat/lean forward, and stare at their hip, if you get no response, then you bump them with the whip, and continue to bump harder and harder till they move. Never use more force then you need. Harley is turning and facing me as soon as I slide to the side and barely get squatted.

Then to get him to go the other direction, you slide to the other side and squat and point at that hip, then use the whip if you get no response.

Does this make sense?

I also got him flexing all the way to his belly, with just one tap on the halter. You stand at their side and put pressure on them...don’t expect them to get all the way around at the first. Decide a point you want them to come to pull to that and hold till they give you some slack...I’ve been doing this from the saddle for a while now, so that was easy. CA, said you should start from the ground tho.

It does make sense... I have seen folk like Monty Roberts do very similar stuff in a round pen. I’d still like to see you doing it. :~)

Back from the vet. Got coggins and vaccines all done for the year, well except for I went ahead and gave West Nile this year, and he’ll have a booster in about 4 weeks. I brought that home and will give it myself. His teeth were fine, no floating, yeah. She looked at his feet, even tho I didn’t ask, she knows about the trouble I’ve had. She thought his feet and shoeing looked great...

So now just wait a few days not worrying that the coggins will come back positive:), and we’ll be clear for a year.

I had to run to town, and I set the computer to load the pictures I took yesterday, it takes so long...and darn only about 1/2 loaded...I don't know what happened. But I'll post these then load the rest again.

These first ones are of CA working Mindy on the ground. He is flexing her here.

Sorry these are grainy, I had to lighten them.

I think this is getting her to disengage her hindquarters.

This is the start of her working with out a halter and lead, she was lunging around him.

Looking/pointing at her hip to get her to face him.

And at the end she took a bow, then laid down, then sat up.

This is Bugs, the problem horse. The one I told you finally started flexing himself.
