This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Could be... they can't get acclimated to it.
But here, horses just can't be out in winter without shelter, we have months of constant wet. They'd become a big walking fungus habitat. I wouldn't allow horses on my place to be stuck outside even if someone wanted that, I couldn't bear to see that.
I understand that. I was just stressing that horses at both ends of the country need shelter from bad weather. Yeah, I know they "are horses" and "have survived" in it for centuries but for how long? At what cost? Besides that, they were in a natural environment. Sorry. I'm just venting.
Becky, tough luck with Harley. This is your same farrier, right? Seems strange that the angles are not correct now. If your farrier is well educated, he really should know more about the feet then a vet. My guess and only a guess, is that, because you had not ridden him a while, he might just have a sore muscle.
Hair, love the pictures of your winter wonderland. Very cold here.
Good Morning everyone ..
Pretty mild here in the Houston area .. the calm before the storm. They are calling for rain this weekend and then that frigid cold front. (well, ok, frigid for US)
Possible sleet and freezing rain on Mon and Tues with temps barely above freezing.
I always said, if it's going to get cold, it could at least SNOW! hehe
Hair - those were fantastic pics you got yesterday. Just beautiful. Well, except for those old pics of the royal mountie. Those made me snicker.
I understand your frustration. I'd be frustrated and concerned too if there was bad weather coming, no shelter, and not a lot I can do about it. Didn't you get them some good outdoor blankets? Really, if they're in waterproof blankets, they'd be OK out with 30s and wet.
Hi Cindy,
You might want to consider getting a couple of light weight Weatherbeeta blankets for just such occasions. Country Supply has them on sale right now for about $50. That might be your cheapest option for peace of mind.
You didn't like those action shots of the ole Bay-Man? :~)
Good morning :~)
Tuffy - we never got to see yours, whathappen?
Heh, you beat me to it by 2 minutes.
Heh... Well, I think she got some already, I saw the pics :~)
Good morning! It's chilly here this morning. Hose froze, even stuffed under the house, so I had to fill water with buckets.
Ummmmmm, define "chilly" ..
Says 28 on the porch. Not as cold as it's going to be tomorrow I hear :~)
OK .. 28 is better than I thought .. I was all ready with my "Holy Frozen Horse Apples, Batman!" comment.. hehe
Trying to remember all the posts I read and answer/comment where I need too:)
Mostly, thanks for the concern about Harley. I think I will give this farrier another chance. Farriers are a dime a dozen around here, but whose to say I wouldn't land up with one worse. I'll get Chris to get out his little angle measuring tool, and we'll see just how far off he is, (which will tell me if the vet knows what she is talking about) I don't have a good eye for that sort of thing. The vet wrote out the instructions, so is all I have to do is hand them to him. She worded them in a very tactful way, not blaming him or telling him he has done something wrong, just that we need some help in the foot area to help clear up the soreness in his shoulder. I am also going to pick up some DMSO today, to rub down his shoulder with twice a day.
Tuffy, I've seen geldings do that before:). It is funny-odd tho that you've had him so long and it just started.
Hair: another batch of great pictures. So funny how comfortable Cyn now is in the barn...As you said yesterday, it would be so nice if they could talk. Animals and babies, I hate it when their sick or acting strange:)
Cindy: So sorry about your problems at the stables. That does sound frustrating. I'm surprised that a boarding stable wouldn't have loafing sheds out in their pastures. Is that a common thing around there?
Well, if I missed someone, sorry:)
Good morning:), our temps are suppose to be in the 60's today, but by tomorrow the high will be in the 30's with rain thru Sun, possibly snow:(. I'm going to town today to get my Fri, errands ran today, so I won't have to get out tomorrow.
Becky
We don't get super "Holy Frozen Horse Apples, Batman" cold very often, but we are supposed to perhaps get in the teens tomorrow and through the weekend. We're socked in by some clear, sunny, but cold Arctic air. We have an expected high of 33 today. I like this actually. Ground's all frozen and no mud :~)
Teens are plenty cold for me .. and I know what you mean about the mud.. When I lived in Tennessee, we had clay. The only time it was tolerable in the winter was when it was frozen!
Good morning... How soon do you think you can get the farrier out?
You probably already know, but wear gloves with the DMSO, or you'll taste it.
Another piece to that puzzle may also be the fact that she can come and go as she pleases now. What ever was bothering her, she may have felt trapped in there with it, and we all know how that effects some horses. Now that she knows that she can go out anytime she wants to she's stopped worrying about it. I'd be interested to see if she remains this comfortable if you were to turn the power to the barn back on while leaving the current stabling conditions the same.
I don't know when I can get him out here. He's due to come on the 19th, but with our weather fixing to get so bad it's going to be hard.
The vet said he would be fine like he is altho he may not completely get over the soreness till his feet are fixed, but it wouldn't kill him. I'll give Chris a call today, and see if by any chance he could make it today, I really doubt it tho.
Thanks for the tip about gloves, but yes I did know that:)
Becky
I thought about that too, that she doesn't feel trapped.
You idea of a test would be interesting:)
Becky
