The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

While you were dealing with the JWs, I went out in our pasture for a bit, the sun has come out, however briefly, and it looked cheerful and glorious out there...

The way Bay is following Cyn around this morning, I think she may end up with NB shaped footprints on her backside by tomorrow. :~\ She's not quite in a completely cooperative mood yet. Must be spring.

Everyone came over to see what I was up to....

Pony giving her "oooh yeah scratch right there..." look while I scratch her chest.

Bay seems OK on his new feet, but I do think he's moving differently. Not sure if that's good or bad... it's just different. Might just be the square toes... or he might be a little sensitive on his feet because the pads are gone, I don't know. I don't think it's bad to give him a few more days on his own to get used to it before we ride.

Had a good ride today. I'm glad because we're going to get a bad Nor'easter tomorrow. :-( Oliver is improving more and more, and today we worked on leg yielding. Of course he was really good in one direction, and really terrible in the other. :-)

Don't know if I ever told you his story, but he was a "rescue" we bought him from a dressage barn who only used him for walk/trot lessons. He was so undernourished and mistreated that he had THREE coats of winter hair on him, but he's shedding out fine this year. He's got a good brain too, really smart, but really stubborn. :-) We're working up to teaching him how to canter.

It sounds like Oscar is doing great. How old is he? (I’m sure you gave us the info once but I’ve forgotten). Stay safe and warm with the bad weather coming. Suddenly, everyone is having a heck of a time with weather extremes.

My friend, Judy called and wanted us to come over and help take photos of their new fillies, for registration.

First we had to capture this little bugger. She was born at the stud owners and been gone for a month. They didn't handle them much and you sure could tell. This one is 2 months old.

Judy's husband and my SIL Ben. She is a pretty little thing.

This filly is 3 months old. Solid colored and is going to be a tank like her dam. The dam has a Superior in halter.

Believe it or not, Oliver is an old man. He’s in his 20s. So I’m going on and on like he’s a youngster, but it just proves that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

Both the fillies are beautiful - what’s their breeding?

That first filly is marked remarkably like Duchess’s Tuffy, isn’t she? Would make a nice matched team ;~)

They are very much alike. The filly has high white on her legs but that’s about all that’s different.

Hope yall made it through the night OK....

So far we've just had lots of heavy rain, but we needed it so I'm really glad. I think the storms are supposed to be pretty well blown out by the time that front gets here.

I FINALLY got my taxes done and e-filed today, so I'm sitting pretty now.

Those are two great looking fillies there. And boy you weren’t kidding about the solid one being a tank. Dang, you could DRIVE a tank through her mama’s front legs. Talk about a chest! Wow!

He is. When he first came here, he was a pushy old cranky sod, with no respect for you or your personal space. With all the attention he gets now, he's really come around to be a lovely horse with quite a personality. We really click, though, and it's great. He looks for me and always come up to meet me at the gate, and follows me like a dog. He loves to work, and looks for the bit and opens his mouth for it on his own when you go to bridle him. If he could, I swear that he would put it in himself. lol.

I really haven't connected with a horse like this since my own horse years ago, so that's why I gush like this and get so excited that we're actually accomplishing things. I'm seriously thinking about getting a video camera to record our progress because while I've ridden and polished up different horses, I've never taken one from the ground up before in a discipline, and for me it's a cheap thrill. :-D
