The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Here's the website of the rescue in our town. There is a lot of info on there about owning/adopting donkeys. I haven't owned one since I was a kid, but we used them to haul wagons and carts and loaded them with packs for trail rides and camping trips. Even if you don't work them, they often have better temperments than ponies and they are very hardy. Check it out: http://www.pvdr.org/

Huh. It's hard for me to tell but he looks lighter, esp his legs.

He looks lighter to me too. Everyone says he'll be a chestnut but he looks like he is going to be a dun or a palomino to me. Well, maybe like his momma??? Nah, but I can dream :) Well, off to bed, 3 1/2 more months before I can retire.

So sad! But they just don't live as long as we do.

At least you have a bunch of Fancy babies to console you.

That's great that she did agility. There's an Irish Setter in our agility club, he's been in training at least since Shelley started five or six years ago . . . and he still hasn't managed to Q in Novice. He's a very handsome boy, but you could shine a flashlight in one ear and out the other . . . . sounds like Fancy was quite another kettle of fish.

My first thought when I saw that boat in that small creek was "tornado". I've found stuff out in the middle of nowhere too and that's the only plausible explanation that I can come up with for them. Either that or Aliens out for a joyride. ;o)

The Saddle birdhouse sure is pretty. It looks like it's made out of tooled leather but I'm sure it couldn't be or it wouldn't hold up to the weather. What IS it made of?

...the feeder Cyn has broken... She grabs and thumps her feed pan when she thinks we're late for a meal and finally cracked and broke it loose...

Bob likes to paw the gate or the wall at feeding time, but when he does that I go back in the feed room and shut the door, no matter how close to the buckets I am, and he doesn't like that very much. He finally figured out that he has to be quiet before I come back out. It took him a while, and he still backslides occasionally, but it sure makes for a quieter feeding time.

I think Sam's gonna be a sorrel. Most sorrel babies that I've ever seen have had those real pale underparts like that.

Just catching up on my reading as work has been crazy. So sorry to hear of your loss. They're always impossible to replace but hopefully you can take comfort from having a house full of her "kids".

Probably my suspicious mind, but I'm thinking "stolen boat that turned out to be too hot to keep." It looks like it WAS a nice boat.

Just hope the reason it turned out to be too hot to keep is NOT that there's a dead body in the bilge.

Good morning:)

Frog: that is one possible explanation. But we've had no tornados in this area in the time frame that it showed up . But you're right about finding stuff out in the middle of nowhere that I've figured got there from wind and tornados.

Duchess: I agree with Frog, I think Sam will be sorrel too. Maybe we should start a wager pool:)

Well, so far no rain has fallen for all the forecasting of it there was:\...Today I start a more serious conditioning regimen with Harley. I'm going to time it by watching how he is handling it. More long trotting. I won't go longer then 2 hours tho...LO...I don't know if I could go longer then that at this point:)

I thought stolen boat too, or insurance fraud...but it could have been dumped a lot easier just in the woods, for one of the above reasons, it didn't have to be in water. That's why I'm thinking just an old boat that kids somehow hauled down there to play in. When the water is down you can see a crack in the side. Of course that could have happened after it was put in the creek, it's very very rocky there.

Yeah, they could have pulled up on that bridge you showed with the boat on a trailer and shoved it off the side and down into the water. But like you say, it seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to, because a even an old flat bottomed boat is pretty darned heavy, even with no motor attached, and that one looked like a speed boat of some sort, the kind with a walk-thru windshield, so it would've been heavier.

I just had another theory...Maybe they had an accident of some kind there, ran off the road maybe, or the trailer came unhitched from the ball and it ended up running off the embankment and down into the creek and they just left it there because it was busted. That happened to my FIL one time. They went across a little bridge that had a dip in the pavement at the far end and the trailer came off the ball and the boat took off and ran down into somebody's front yard and wrapped itself around a tree. They didn't leave the boat, probably because it was in somebody's yard, but I guess they might have if it had just been out in the middle of nowhere.

You know, that makes a lot of sense. Wrecked it, saw it was damaged beyond repair, just shoved it off the road into the creek.

Is there a trailer with it, I wonder.

It's all plastic. :~) It should hold up just fine, although it may fade.

RE Cyn and the feedpan... she does it when we're in the house, or when I'm on the porch... it's a game, whether it's feeding time or not. I'll yell "Cyn!" and she stops... But 30 seconds later, "Thwonk" "Thwonk" "Thwonk" I don't go out to feed when she's doing it, but she'll sometimes give it a "Thwonk" while we're measuring... And she does it when there's grain in it... it helps her get the bits out of the corners (spilling half of them)

I think she likes this new bucket, since she can move it around and shake the grain out of the corners...

It was still on the wall as of feeding a few minutes ago...

Good morning everyone!

~sip~
