The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That's what I wondered. He looks like a dun or maybe a buckskin but a reddish color :) Anyway, I was looking at his black mane and tail and his legs and kept saying to myself, that's an odd bay :)

That's a nice-looking gelding that Kristy's got there. That's strange about him messing his stifle up like that. He must've really been pulling a rip-snorter when he did that. I'm glad to hear that he's better though.

JP sure is a cutie!

I'm glad you found a place for Belle. She has good babies, she'll do well as a broodmare. I would really rather sell all my mares as broodmares than riding horses. There are just too many people who don't have the knowledge or patience buying riding horses. I'm getting ready to list some of our horses for sale again and I always dread it. But I'm working really hard on retiring by July and to do that, they have to go.

Well that's good to know about Belle... I'm glad to hear it, I don't remember hearing you mention it before!

LOL...I didn't mention it:)...felt like a traitor, even after it turned out OK.I don't have a problem with selling most horses at a sell barn. But it was hard to sell her there.

Thanks:)

The colt is a nice horse...and they have no clue what happened really, he was fine one day and lame the next. The vet said 9 months of pasture rest...looks like it did the trick, but it's one of those things that it could never be a problem again, or it could, you just don't know. And given what Charlie and Kristy do with horses, barrels and rope, they think it would be better to go ahead and sell him.

Well good luck...selling is hard even to the right buyer...but sometimes it has to be done. They are just to expensive to keep as pasture ornaments, or pets, IMO.

The few people I had look at Belle, like the chiropractor guy, they all wanted to try and "fix" her for a riding horse...that just worried me. But after the drought last year, every one was unloading brood mares, etc...it wasn't the best time to sell, but the drought and pasture conditions was a large part of why I went ahead and sold her when I did. The kids pasture was getting thin, and Belle was just an extra mouth, that wasn't doing anything and never was. If the pasture conditions would have been better, I still may have had her. But it straps the kids, and was an extra expense for me too.

I understand completely where you're coming from wanting to sell so you can retire:)I'd sell in a heart beat for a reason like that.

Well, I'm glad it turned out OK, and sorry you felt like you didn't want to tell. I think all of us understood it was hard to know what to do with her.

It wasn't that I didn't want to tell because I didn't think you all would understand. I just didn't want to talk about it:) Jenny and Kristy were kind enough to take her to the sell barn for me, so it was one of those out of sight out of mind things. I just didn't even think about it much...except for when I got the $36.00 check:)...that gave me a lot to think about.

Understood.

We cleaned stalls and have them air-drying... I really want to have a machine come in and peel out all the buildup inside and right outside the lean-to. It'll dry for summer and be better, but in the fall when it gets wet it will just expand into suck mud again.

We may take down the lean to to the level it should be at and put mats in it... no bedding out there, just a nice, clean surface.

I took a picture of Tyke today to put on our website and realized I hadn't posted any pictures of her here since we brought her home.

She is being bred to Tuffy (his only mare this year) to see if he can throw color on solid or quarter horse mares. She is 7/8 quarter horse.

Well, we'll have to see if she settles, she's 16yr old and a maiden mare but no problem breeding at all. And, theoretically, she should have a loud colored foal since she's a solid and Tuffy is a snowcap. Of course, theories are a dime a dozen.

You'll have to visit sometime after I move.....check out the South...my kids are still here and with the grandkids, but I don't see them all that much because as the grandkids got older, they have so much activity that they don't have time for "grandma" Your situation is different with the kids living with you.
I figure that if I really miss my kids, then I'll drive up and spend a week with them and hopefully they will come down and see me.
