The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good Morning and happy Friday!

We are back in a cold spell again, hope this is the last one.

One of the horses Alison used last year, is at our barn now. She will use him at the shows this year. He is an 18 year old QH gelding. The one that had the EPM. So, we have a barn full again.

No calls on the kitty, so I guess she is going to stay here. No way, am I calling the weird lady back. The cat is a sweetie. When do you start being a collector? :)

You usually don't see the dewclaws printing, but when the deer is running, in very soft soil, or is a large buck, you see them! When the deer is running, the toe prints spread wider apart.

You can tell the back prints from the front by looking at the distance from the dewclaw print to the main toe print. Hind feet have more distance.

This is important because it's how you tell a doe from a buck. If the hind feet are tracking inside the front feet, it's a buck (they have wider shoulders). Vice versa, it's a doe (they have wider hips).

-- just an old deer hunter. You examine tracks to decide where you're going to set up your tree stand. Also look at scrapes, rubs, and trails to water or food.

Great pics Becky! I'm glad Harley's back to his old self again too. I think that white blooming tree is a wild pear tree. At least that's what's blooming in all the woods around here.

So sorry about your weather....I'm having a hard time believing it, but I think we may just be done with winter here....knock on wood. The extended forecast is showing great weather. It got down in the 30's last night, colder then it has been in a while, but it's suppose to get back up in the 60's this afternoon, and 70's all weekend.

I'm glad the cat is a sweet one...cat's can be not sweet:).

Well, having the QH around, maybe you and Alison can go trail ride together. How's Bodie doing, have you had a chance to ride him yet? I know your weather has made riding tough.

Becky

Speaking of cats, I gotta share this pic I took of Da Bear last night...

We're giving my Sister-in-law a baby shower at the end of the month so we all went in together and bought her this big whoop-de-doo of a carseat that she wanted. But the box is so darned big that I've got no place in my dinky little house to put it. So it's been hanging out in my livingroom since I bought it, waiting to be wrapped, and Bear has decided that it's his own personal chair. He sits on it all the time and I think he's really going to miss it when it's gone.

Bodie is doing fine, getting fat and no, I have not had a chance to ride him. The days that were nice, it was way too muddy. I had let him out with Biscuit, but she got a few bite marks and that did not make my daughter happy.

Alison has her one-eyed pony, Tubby to ride on the trails. She can handle PJ ok in the show ring, as that is his element, but I don't know about on the trails.

We are suppose to get about 2-3 inches of snow..ugh. I saw that my tulips are popped up, poor things.

Great you are having decent weather to ride. I really enjoyed the pictures.

LOL...maybe you should ask her if you can have the box back after she opens it:)

BTW, those are nice car seats...JP has one like that. The one I have has a fold down thing in the front..I like the type like in your picture better.

Sorry about the nasty weather. Sounds like you need to be following Estrogen's lead and moving south.

I'm sure it's nice but I about fell over dead when I found out how much the darned thing COST! But I guess since it's supposed to adapt with them until they get over 60lbs and can sit in the car without a carseat at all then it's not so bad.

LOL...everything for kids cost way to much...

I didn't know this but when Kristy had a car accident a couple of years ago, when the insurance company settled, they took JP's old seat, and bought the new one...they said once a car seat has been in an accident it's integrity is questionable, and they just replace them automatically, but you have to give them the old one.

Interesting! I didn't know that either. I guess they take the old one to keep you from going ahead and using it anyways.

They say the same thing about helmets. That if you've ever taken a fall in one that you should replace it, even if it still looks ok. Sounds like a racket to me!

Numerous times, I have thought about it. If the cost of living wasn't so much cheaper here, I would probably leave. That and it would be hard to leave the granddaughter. Of course, they live with me, so they would have to come too! It's hard to pick up and leave somewhere you have lived all your life. My grandparent's old farmstead, where my mother was born, is just a few hundred yards away, so my roots run deep. It is all the new homes that have been built in the area, that makes the water stand, instead of running off. Hence we have all the mud. I remember as a child, riding in the woods on the old farm. It's nothing but a swamp now.

Yes, it get cold, but there is not much concern about hurricanes, tornadoes, or earthquakes.... It will get better in a few weeks.

Good morning, - you started being a collector about three animals ago I think. Welcome to my world. :)

It's been in the 70's here this week, hope you get spring soon.

I know whatcha mean about roots. I was born and raised here too but there's been many a time when I've longed to live in the mountains, but these ol' roots just keep holding me here.

The cost of living is pretty cheap here too. When I watch all these shows on HGTV like Flip this house and My house is worth WHAT, I just keep thinking "You paid THAT much for THAT house?!" and I don't feel so bad about living here anymore. ;o)

but you have to give them the old one.

I wonder if they use the old ones for research purposes to check the affects of an accident or something.

It's hard to pick up and leave somewhere you have lived all your life.

It is hard to pul up roots. I live the first 30 years of my life in San Diego. I left my famiy and friends behind to move here. I have made good friends here that makes it easier, but the problem is I could never go back and live the same lifestyle I am accustomed to here (Not that it is all that fancy). Cost of living is just to high in California.

We didn't move away . . . but Atlanta has changed SO much that it really isn't the same. It was a small Southern town when I was growing up.

Once the youngest gets out of high school we're moving to the country, near a small county seat probably. Then it'll seem like Atlanta when I was a kid.

I don't really care for the suburbs, although I'd like to still be within shouting distance of Atlanta. Newnan and Woodstock are possibilities. We have lots of friends near Newnan and near Woodstock.
