This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Maureen, so sorry to hear about your nephew. I was thinking of you just the other day, while I was walking...You come to mind often when I'm thinking of getting healthy:)
Good morning everyone...
I was planning on riding today, and still may, the tempratures are nice, but we are having lots of wind, 35mph gusts, and stronger as the day goes on...Harley does fine in wind so I don't really need to train in that area, so I may pass, this much wind is just not fun...
Getting lots of house work done since I'm not outside...so there's that to be said of bad weather:)

We will continue to pray like mad!
Prayers for Phillip.
Prayers to Phillip.
to = for.
Some days I have no brain.
Good morning and thank you.
Good morning - Yes, I'll add Phillip to my prayer list.
Thank you - yes, news is great.
Duchess, you've got a lot of people to worry about out there, I'm gonna be praying for YOU too! Hang in there!
For my novel, I have a character who needs a very specific type of horse.
This is how I describe the horse: 17 hands high, solid black, great speed and endurance.
An Arabian may fit the bill but an Arabian does not get above 15 hands. (I have done some research so if my ignorance is showing, please forgive me)
Also, lets say I stick with the Arabian and reduce the height, would there be any cause to cross breed horses - an Arabian to a thoroughbred or anything like that? Or would a breeder think this utterly foolish. The novel takes place during the Civil War.
What is a "warmblood" breed? I will look up the Hanoverian. Thanks!
Actually, I'm not sure:) I just know there are some breeds, who fall into a catagory called "warmbloods", but I'm not sure why.
I just know Hanoverians are very large, and dark colored usually.

I just looked them up on the web. They are beautiful!
OK, I'm still thinking about it, and Throughbreds might work better. They can get that tall, they can be black, and they have lots of speed and endurance.
Becky
Becky this horse is perfect. Thank you so much for suggesting them. And the fact that they were used for the cavalry is even better!
Thanks again!
OK, well, I learned something new:)
Becky
I was just trying to figure that out too (if they were here in 1860), but hey it's a novel. I only need one and I really don't have to explain where it came from only how my character came into possession of it. :)
