The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It's not coming, it's here...well, at least the wind is. Our wind chills are supposedly in the teens, and will be in the single digits by this evening. No accumulations of snow tho.

Good news is it will be in the 50's this weekend.

Yeah - I like to mow too. I'm gonna go mow the scotch broom down in the pasture, if I can get to it. It's the only thing growing and it's a foot tall in places... would like to set the mower low and cut it off at the ground while I can before the grass comes up.

But we're supposed to get some heavy rain... Better make sure my drainage is cleaned out.

Morning!

Bitter cold here with wind. 15. We have a winter storm warning in effect too. Nothing horsey to report... it's been too cold.

Hi.

All good advise from the others. My main concern would be the adjustment to different water, climate and biting insects. It will take him a little while to acclimate to the changes. Make sure you establish a relationship with a good vet in the area. They will give you advise on what inoculations are needed.

As far as a companion, if he gets along well by himself, then I would not advise it. Unless, you bought two other "pasture pals" you would have to deal with leaving one at home while you went to ride. You are better off not having him "married" up to a companion and having to worry about how each one is acting.

If I recall, you are living in the South in the winter and coming back to Ohio in the summer, right?

My gosh, how do those guys stay in business if they tell owners that they shouldn't own horses? Who do those guys think pay the bills? When I read that first derogatory response I couldn't believe what I was reading. I thought I had read it wrong.

Good Morning.

The Winter storm left us with about a foot of snow and it is still coming down. Classes were canceled for Alison and a lot of offices are closed. My daughter got stuck in the driveway trying to go to work. MY SIL had plowed yesterday evening, but though the night, a lot more snow fell. Thanks goodness, I have 4-wheel drive and we were able to pull her out.

We have a vet in this area that I know has told several people I know they shouldn't own horses. He's an arrogant pig, and I'd never use him for anything.

Celia, my friend uses him because he lived across the street from her. She brought a mare over her to breed one time that had a brand new foal on her side. The foal developed joint ill and it should up while he was here. Celia came and brought that vet with her.... He was so rude...you could tell he wanted to complain about my barn, it was raining that day, and with just a shed row barn rain was blowing part way in to the stalls. He didn't like that, he didn't like that I had dirt floors, even tho they were mucked every day...I was trying to be nice, and asked a question (he doesn't like for anyone to ask questions), he ignored me, so I asked again. He looked up at me with this hateful glare and literally yelled an answer. It was all I could do to keep from bashing him in the head with a shovel. He knew it too, and told Celia if she wanted him to treat the horse she'd have to bring it home. Other then I felt bad for Celia, that didn't bother me at all...I didn't want him back on my property even if it wasn't my horse.

I asked Celia why she put up with him, he treated her that way all the time too. She said for convenience. It was obvious she was intimidated by him tho. He pretty much specialized in breeding horses, problem breeding mares...so he worked a lot in high dollar barns. But IMO, I'd bet if he looked over his customer list it was more the back yard horse owners that kept him in business rather then the big barns. Percentage wise I'd say there is more of them then big barns, especially since vets around here are a dime a dozen, and sharing all the big barns.

The snow that they have been forecasting since Sat. finally got here. I don't think we'll get enough to really measure, but it's sticking a bit.

Good morning!

We got about 7 inches of snow yesterday but now it's all ice because we had rain and freezing rain for about 6 hours. I don't have a garage so my truck was actually a trucksicle. Had to use a spoon handle to break the ice around the door seal. Roads not too bad but the horses won't be going out in the pastures for weeks. Just too dangerous.

I don't know. If I get time today I'll go back and ask them. I have this problem. I don't really care much what people think about me if I'm happy with me but I get all riled up when I see someone else , that I think is being treated unfairly. That has got me in more fights. I've been stewing about this. The woman asked for help and got kicked in the teeth.

I don't know any arrogant vets but there is a well known shoer in this area that everybody hates. He's supposedly a very talented shoer and would probably have a ton more business if acted a little less like a pompous ass. I wouldn't use him to put shoes on a dog.

It reminds me of a story tuffy's shoer told me the last time he was here. Some lady brought a horribly foundered pony into the vet clinic, he was so bad his feet had grown out into that curled up snowshoe look. She was very embarrassed, the pony had been out on pasture for a long time and they didn't pay much attention to him. She told the vets and shoer she was afraid they would call the humane society on her but they said of course not. They were there to help, not get people in trouble. Heck, if they called the humane society on everybody that made a stupid mistake with their animals they would run off most of their business.

Those dumb jerks were way out of line. I guess they never made any mistakes with their kids? Perhaps they shouldn't be parents if they ever made a mistake.
