This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
It's not coming, it's here...well, at least the wind is. Our wind chills are supposedly in the teens, and will be in the single digits by this evening. No accumulations of snow tho.
Good news is it will be in the 50's this weekend.

Yeah - I like to mow too. I'm gonna go mow the scotch broom down in the pasture, if I can get to it. It's the only thing growing and it's a foot tall in places... would like to set the mower low and cut it off at the ground while I can before the grass comes up.
But we're supposed to get some heavy rain... Better make sure my drainage is cleaned out.
All good advise from the others. My main concern would be the adjustment to different water, climate and biting insects. It will take him a little while to acclimate to the changes. Make sure you establish a relationship with a good vet in the area. They will give you advise on what inoculations are needed.
As far as a companion, if he gets along well by himself, then I would not advise it. Unless, you bought two other "pasture pals" you would have to deal with leaving one at home while you went to ride. You are better off not having him "married" up to a companion and having to worry about how each one is acting.
If I recall, you are living in the South in the winter and coming back to Ohio in the summer, right?
Read through this entire thread, guys. Very depressing in many ways:

That is quite a thread, and sad how it ended. Good post over there.

Yall don't miss this one:')http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1784360/posts
that one guy over there is such a jerk.
Sad. I would never ask a question there though. She got slammed.
My gosh, how do those guys stay in business if they tell owners that they shouldn't own horses? Who do those guys think pay the bills? When I read that first derogatory response I couldn't believe what I was reading. I thought I had read it wrong.
The Winter storm left us with about a foot of snow and it is still coming down. Classes were canceled for Alison and a lot of offices are closed. My daughter got stuck in the driveway trying to go to work. MY SIL had plowed yesterday evening, but though the night, a lot more snow fell. Thanks goodness, I have 4-wheel drive and we were able to pull her out.
The snow that they have been forecasting since Sat. finally got here. I don't think we'll get enough to really measure, but it's sticking a bit.

Good morning!
We got about 7 inches of snow yesterday but now it's all ice because we had rain and freezing rain for about 6 hours. I don't have a garage so my truck was actually a trucksicle. Had to use a spoon handle to break the ice around the door seal. Roads not too bad but the horses won't be going out in the pastures for weeks. Just too dangerous.
I don't know. If I get time today I'll go back and ask them. I have this problem. I don't really care much what people think about me if I'm happy with me but I get all riled up when I see someone else , that I think is being treated unfairly. That has got me in more fights. I've been stewing about this. The woman asked for help and got kicked in the teeth.
I don't know any arrogant vets but there is a well known shoer in this area that everybody hates. He's supposedly a very talented shoer and would probably have a ton more business if acted a little less like a pompous ass. I wouldn't use him to put shoes on a dog.
It reminds me of a story tuffy's shoer told me the last time he was here. Some lady brought a horribly foundered pony into the vet clinic, he was so bad his feet had grown out into that curled up snowshoe look. She was very embarrassed, the pony had been out on pasture for a long time and they didn't pay much attention to him. She told the vets and shoer she was afraid they would call the humane society on her but they said of course not. They were there to help, not get people in trouble. Heck, if they called the humane society on everybody that made a stupid mistake with their animals they would run off most of their business.
Those dumb jerks were way out of line. I guess they never made any mistakes with their kids? Perhaps they shouldn't be parents if they ever made a mistake.
Nasty storm here, too. Stay safe and warm.
