The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I didn't leave because of anything you said:), I have JP here today.

I also agree that if something is wrong you should fix it, is what was trying to say, is I can never tell what's wrong. I tried to educate myself and think I made a mess of things:). I'm just going to have to trust the vet and farrier to work together.

Things here are fine, other then the fact it is winter:).

We have a cold here running thru the family now, so far I haven't gotten it...knock on wood...so everyone else is sick and crabby and snotty.

Well, I found out was was wrong with my knee. I'm standing during lectures and I noticed today that I am resting my right foot on a bar and putting all my weight on my left leg. I really should go see a doctor but I'm going to try a couple of other things and stop this first.

Goose is Truly's 10mth old colt. On all my other colts, I've always waited until they were 2 to geld them, but since Goose will have to be kept with mares no matter where I put him, I sure don't want him breeding anybody. My sister had a long yearling sneek up and breed one of her mares once so maybe I'm just a little paranoid. Does anybody think that 10mths old is too early? I prefer to have it done when it's cold outside, because there are no flies and I feel like the swelling would be less that way. What do y'all think?

Just a guess, but you may be hyper-extending your knee when you're standing like that. You might try one of those elastic knee-brace things to see if that might help, and oh yeah, quit standing like that! ;o)

That is one of the try first plans. I'm going to pick one up at Walmart today. The over the bed table I've been leaning over is back where it should be.

LOL! Understood. You're spending most of your day chasing him around trying to keep him from wrecking the place or killing himself I'll bet.

With you 100% on this one, Becky. Even though we might have been around horses all our lives, we do not have the knowledge they have been trained for. You see one horse, they see dozens. Sure, you can read and study, which every horse owner should do, but leave the serious problem solving to the experts.

To my knowledge, Bodie has never been shod. He was not broke until last year, so I wouldn't think that he had been. Depending on where I ride and how much, I will probably only have him shod in the front.

Are you the one who has the vet that feeds the horse's noogies to his dogs?

Noooooo. I gotta stop sometime! Nine horses is a bit much. Three 3 youngsters that need regular riding is really more than I can get around to, plus I've got Ellie coming two this spring so I'll soon have 4 to keep ridden. I'm hoping to sell Hope, Ellie and Goose at some point.

I think that 10 months might be a little early, but that's just shy of under one year, when it's usually done. ( so I think... I've never had to pay attention to such things because I've never had a horse go through the gelding process. Any colts that I've had to take care of were always kept as stallions) The best person to check with would be your vet, and if he thinks it's ok, then go for it. Especially if he has to be kept with mares.

Hey everyone:

My aunt sent me an e-mail about a bunch of non-ridable horses who are up for adoption in New York, and they are all elderly. She had asked me if I knew of any people who were looking for pasture pals, and I don't, but maybe one of you does. Anyway, here's the link to the online version of the e-mail from Best Friends Network.

I think if he's dropped and available, he can be snipped :~) They may develop a little bit better neck and face if left intact longer, but if there's reason to geld him, and I think an accidental baby is a good reason, I'd go for it :~)

Poor old timers. They sure look healthy enough. At least the owners are seeking homes for them now, if they can no longer care for them. I sure don't know anyone who would be interested.

It isn't a sad story, they aren't abused or neglected, they just have elderly owners who can't take care of them anymore.
