The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Fortunately Blue is outside most of the time. But I'm getting to the point where any dog in the house is too many. It seems I spend every weekend vacumning and doing laundry and mopping floors. I think probably I'm just feeling sorry for myself today and I'll get over it :) but it would be so nice to have a clean house that stays that way.

Max is 6lbs, Angel 10lbs and Tessa is 13lbs.

All of the horses have grown a tremendous amount of hair this year. It will be a bear getting the show horses shed out when the time comes.

LOL - she gives away the new dog huh? Well, for your husband's sake, I hope she doesn't do that this time.

Yeah, I don't know how many times we have had to search the neighborhood.

Yes, with 4 cats and 2 dogs in here, my place is always a mess. But, we love them, so what you going to do. Sometimes, I feel like kicking everyone out (kids included) and having a nice, clean, very lonely house.

It's either that or Furrs and I got into it with the manager a couple of weeks ago and told him what I thought of his take out policy. Actually there is a donut shop over there too.

Hair:) great pictures...but I have to say it:), I cringe seeing a horse free lunging:).Probably in a horse as seasoned as Bay, it wouldn't be a problem...but I still have to say it:)

Tuffy, I use Purina Horse Chow 100. I kept a very old horse is very good condition on it years ago. He couldn't eat hay either. I do feed 3 X's a day just to keep them eating as often as possible, but you can get by with 2X's a day, if you can't manage 3. I actually like the Horse Chow better then Equine Senior. HC has no molasses in it or what ever it is in the ES that makes it sticky. IMO, they don't need all that sweetness. It is no better for them then it is for us. And every horse I've ever had likes it just fine. There have been times when I've given them a sweet feed for some reason or other, and they will eat the HC first and just pick at the SF.

To be perfectly honest, I can't imagine a house with no animals :) but sometimes it would be nice if they picked up after themselves.

About Bay's weight. I would consider that maybe being lighter is better for his feet, and why he is now doing better. There is nothing wrong with a little rib showing actually. There just like people in that area IMO, carrying extra weight is just hard on everything, especially as we get to be Seniors. If he is doing so good, I wouldn't change a thing.

I pretty much agree, but right now, I'm ready for my out door dogs to move back outdoors:)....I have not enjoyed having them in the house, and it's given me pause about how much easier life would be with out them....does that make me a terrible person:)?

I've learned my lesson tho, ANY dog I ever get is going to be house broke when they are youngsters...and crate trained, even if they are intended as outdoor dogs.

I think the cold is part of my problem. When the weather is nice, the min pins are out in their run a good bit of the day. Now they are always in the house except for their 30 second run out in the morning and before bed.

Who said he didn't look good? Wasn't me. I asked if he was losing wt. When animals or humans loose weight, even if overweight, it can be good or something that needs to be watched. No advice or changes were suggested. .

I never said you said he didn't look good, or that you made suggestions to change something. I was just commenting that it might be something to consider...Read my post again.

And BTW Hair, I think he looks fine, I did not mean to suggest anything to the contrary.

Hullo all - we're back :~) Thanks for the commentary on Bay, I think you're right Becky, that he's better off on the light side, for both his feet and his joints. I like to see a little more fat on his topline for saddle fit, but overall, I think he's good.

Misstargets, thanks for the snow pics! You are getting a bunch!

And CD - we were packin' today, for the possibility of bear, but we didn't get in much of a walk, there were far too many cars there today, we didn't want to go when we might run into so many other walkers, since it meant we ought to have the dogs on a leash, barking at the gun club activity that was also going on up there, and they were gonna be a pain. We were alone up there when we went during the week... I think we'll go again tomorrow. Surprised to see so many cars up there today, it's kinda cold and early in the year. We don't usually see that many non-horse vehicles up there even in summer! I guess if it's been well visited and the gun club has been active this winter, maybe the bear risk is also less. I had wondered if it was pretty quiet, if the bears might be venturing down a little further into some of those areas they might feel run off of in summer.

Becky, we were at the other trailhead today, it was a mess... pics in a minute here when I can get them uploaded.

I think working him will develop muscle and help fill in his topline even if he doesn't gain weight.

By "other trailhead" is it one we went to, or the one that is way up the hill?

I hope so. :~)

Oh - and on free lunging, I know the whole story ;~) and agree, for discipline... But I'm not lunging for discipline so much as just exercise, get him breathing and sweating a little. If he wanted to run the whole pasture, I really wouldn't care as long as he kept moving. He moves better loose, in the turns, which I just find interesting and good to know.
