This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
We did talk about it, and he just said “it’s not that bad really...” I just haven’t heard them make that complaint before.
Hmmm... well, I’m not sure he actually used the word thrush, he just said things more like “bacteria have got up there “ and “thrush remedies like Koppertox or something would be good... though the stuff he put on was something else... some kind of Magic something or other.
I wish I’d have taken a picture before he put the medicine on, because it didn’t look that black. The medicine made it look like that. More like the dull dark you see at the edges. And now I can’t see it with the shoe on.
Koppertox is very thin, it can soak under and get under the shoe.
Funny tho, I was thinking the same thing as MT. I’ve never heard of thrush getting in the white line like that. I’ve only ever heard of it getting in the grooves around the frog.

That is good it is not that bad and with treatment, the bacteria should clear up. Seedy toe would be in the toe area anyhow, so that is out and I am sure he would have recognized that condition. You could try soaking his foot in a bucket with an iodine solution.
He didn’t treat it like a big deal... just said it was because of the recent mud... I was just surprised because we have mud all winter and none of this has happened before... maybe it’s the wet and warm at the same time.
Most definitely I would think the wet and warm would be different then wet and cold. As well as he was moving when you were working him, and since the farrier isn’t worried, I hope you are not worrying:).

I am going to take my trailer to the dealers now and see how much the damage is. Talk to you later.
I thought about this ‘lack of work’ issue that you’ve so-subtley brought up :~) Even standing in that creek on the trail a couple times a week might have helped a lot before. Otherwise, I can’t get it clean under there. The stuff gets knocked out of there and the cold water flushes it out... maybe.
I don’t ever really pick their feet.
I’m not really worrying. I’m not going to post a thread over ‘there’ about it. So they can convince me he needs immediate remedial work... It’s not hurting him or anything, it’s sortof like the normal black we see around nail holes is just worse than usual. I just don’t, of course want it to get to the point where it does hurt.
There’s only one place where there’s really unhealthy footing and that’s in the lean to. the mares pee in there and we can’t really clean it out. The rest of it, where there’s mud, it’s not ‘unhealthy open sewer’ mud, it’s clean mud. We need to do something in there... been thinking about scraping it down and putting mats in there.
On the bright side... Bay behaved 100% better for the farrier. I’ve really not wanted him to become any worse, and he’s too old to be difficult for the farrier, jumping out of his hands like he’s been doing. I did something different. While he trimmed Cyn and Pony and ecurbh held them, I went out and lunged Bay. I think it did two things, got his mind right and took his edge off, and also limbered him up so he isn’t stiff. He was good. By next time maybe he won’t tense up every time the farrier moves that rolly cart of his.
Damage? Are you talking about the original damage or did something new happen?
LOL...and I thought I was even more subtle then that:).
I don’t think a lack of work would cause this.
I don’t pick feet other then before and after a ride, and shoot, I haven’t been riding much lately either so I can’t say anything about anyone right now:) I’m going today. I pick mainly because of all the rock we have around here. I almost generally always find a small stone stuck in the groove of the frog if there is mud. I like knowing I’m starting out at least with no rocks in their feet. If I feel the horse moving differently also, I’ll get off and pick them to rule out/in a rock stuck.
It may be that the lack of the pads this year is letting more stuff under the shoe. I’d think around the hoof wall the pads would have been like washers, not letting anything in or out.
About the not riding much....I’ve pretty much decided, that at least for this year I’m not competing anymore. I was thinking about it about a month ago, and you know, I just was like, gawd, it’s time to start conditioning again. Then I thought, you know if I feel that way about it why the heck am I doing it. The one I would have gone to is about a month away. I just don’t feel like getting ready for it. I just want to ride easy and have nice pleasurable ride. I’m a bit disappointed in myself, but I think that is just more a regret that I realize I’m getting older and hard work is, well just that, hard work now:). I’m not into hard work anymore. Also I have you all coming to get ready for and that sounds like more fun then hours of conditioning. So unless something drastic happens with my attitude, I’m just your average backyard horse owner, that trail rides some:)

Well, we’ll all have a bit of a light year then, we’ve just been too busy with other things, and if we’re going to ride, we need to make it a priority and not let other things get in the way.
It’s like you said, it’s easy to ‘not’ go. But once we do go, we’re never sorry. It’s always “ah... this is good, glad we came”.
If you get all gung ho again, you can compete next year.
I wonder when I should start looking at plane tickets... Should start shopping them any way!
Might not hurt to start looking. I can’t remember how early I bought mine.
I was thinking around the start of Sept, I’d start bringing it up, so I can get an idea of how many are for sure coming, and when, and for how long.

Hey Hair! Good job on finally getting a pic of the farrier’s tat. It’s definately unique looking. It looks like the thrush in the white line is probably there because he’s got some flaring at the quarters. I imagine he put something like venetian iodine in there. Hopefully that’ll take care of it and as he continues to shoe him and gets his foot tightened up you won’t have that problem any more. His foot looks really good otherwise though. He’s got such nice thick hoof walls!
The hoof wall separation you’re seeing in the quarters may be caused by a SLIGHT bit of founder that might have been the result of the more-abundant-than-usual pasture grass that’s been brought on by all the rain you’ve been having. Seems like you said before that the pasture had usually pretty much dried up by this time year.
I think this is esactly what’s caused Bob’s hoof problems. It was so dry for so long and all the grass dried up and then it started to rain and the grass really put out in leaps and bounds and the horses really dug into it. He never showed any signs of soreness while he had his shoes on, but I think the hoof wall separated a little bit and weakened and dried out and then the nails just started to break out. That’s my theory anyways. I’ve started putting a muzzle on him at night and rotating it to Hope during the day. They’re both way too fat and although she’s not having the hoof breaking problem yet I thought I might be able to head it off with her. And this might not be Bay’s problem at all. I’m just rambling and trying to figure out why Bob’s all of a sudden started to have hoof problems when he never had them before.
That is what I use when I see Thrush. And no it will not come off your hands!!!! Have not had thrush problems this year, not enough rain.
Hubby and I went riding in Belvidere, TN this weekend, will post pictures shortly. Have to tell you this was probably the toughest terrain I have ever ridden. Slippery rocks (even the DrillTek did not help much) steep slick embankments and then it rained on us. We got lost a few times (both of us are directionally challenged)we ended up in the saddle 8 hours. I have never been more proud of Blade than I was this weekend. Thank you Frog for a wonderful horse. Pictures shortly.
MT, where in Ohio is this place? My brother lives in Lebanon and we have thought about traveling to Ohio and camping with the horses so my brother can camp with us.
Same incident with the tire I hit. I had not used the sink and terlet yet in the camper and did not notice it was damaged. Being it was not completely broke off and the sink drain is underneath, you could not tell, until water was run. He is going to call me with an estimate later. The holding tank will have to be replaced, along with the hot water heater cover. The sink drain will need a cap or something. The gray water does not run into the holding tank.
Thanks frog. :~)
We’ve ordered the koppertox stuff. I’ll try not to get it on me, but I don’t have a good track record in that regard. Knowing I shouldn’t touch it, I’ll probably spill it all over me ;~) I’ll hope to see it gone by the next shoeing or I’ll start to worry about it.
The farrier did say by now he’d hoped to see a change in the angle of Bay’s new growth, and he’s not seeing it. Said Bay had stubborn toes. I said he’s been growing them that shape a lot of years and he may be slow to change.
Oh - bummer that had to happen on your brand new trailer :~\
