The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good for him and good for you for thinking about the birds. I wonder if "my" ducks will be back today.

It's a new one I got for Christmas. A KodakZ650. It has a 10X optical zoom.

I need to go pour water on mine again.

Suet feeders really bring in the more exotic birds here. The seed feeders just bring in the littler species.

I just took a picture of a crow I noticed sitting out on the ground. After I took the picture I realized he was hurt. The feathers on his back were sticking up all over the place, and his wings were dragging. He got up and moved off pretty fast but never flew:(. I'll get the picture loaded, but I don't feel right posting a picture of a hurt bird...poor thing. I sure hope Grizzly didn't do this....hard to imagine him catching a crow.

I'm scoping out a new digital .. I've got a good SLR and a cheap digital .. I've been holding out for a good SLR/digital, but I don't think it's in my budget right now.

Poor thing. Tweek caught one of the little birds yesterday. our little fenced cat free zone works pretty well, but they do venture out.

SLR????

We found this one online from Walmart cheaper even with shipping then you could get it in their store.

I want to get some of the rechargable batteries but when I looked last time they were sold out.

Yeah you have, you just forgot about it. I put it down last year when I was doing all that gravel work around the side of the barn. It's great stuff. Once you scrape down to a good solid base, you put it down then put 5 or 6 inches of gravel on top of it. It'll hold up a tractor with a 1200# roll of hay on the front end.

This is what it looked like after the base was prepared but before it was finished...

It looks like really thick black felt and it comes on 15 foot wide rolls that are 300 feet long. The co-op where I buy it will sell it by the linear foot. This particular piece was 15X30. They cut it for me, folded it up and I hauled it home in the back of the Jeep. It cost $1.75 a foot so it ended up costing about $55. This fall I did the same thing in front of this barn as well as in front of the barn at my FIL's where the mares are. The mud had gotten so deep there that I couldn't even get in with a tractor. The fabric had gone up to $2.75 a foot, but it's still worth it. Getting in there is a breeze now.

Speaking of batteries...I was headed to Walmart to exchange the card and the Mustang won't start either. Darn these all weather batteries. My son has it on the charger for me.

Here he is. The black things that look like background clutter are feathers on his back.

Speaking of Tweek catching a bird, last week when the weather was nice, I propped the front door open when I had to go to town. That way Susie can go out in the garden. Anyway when I got home there were feathers, gray ones with vivid red tips (Cardinal), all over the living room...I have a feeling one flew in the door and Susie and Bink "played" with it.When I got home, I had noticed that Susie ran out in the yard with something in her mouth, but didn't think about it much till I found the feathers. Later I found the little corpse outside.

Is that like asphalt felt? We always have some of that laying around here, left over from a job Mack did.

It gets even better.

Cleaning out the fridge I found a Hershey chocolate bar with almonds.

First you take a banana and leave the skin on. Cut a slit down the middle. Put chocolate in the slit. Wrap in tinfoil and put in oven for about fifteen mintues to warm it --- not cook it. Chocolate melts.

Open and squirt on Reddi-Whip. Eat. Mmmmmm.

We are covered in ice here and sleet still falling. Birds are flocking in for seed, they really need it, and Sam sits at the window making little mewing noises. I made it down to the horses with oats, hay and alfalfa this a.m. but couldn't get the truck back up the hill to the house so left it down there. It's a short walk anyhow.

Maybe not. They may have just gone up on the by-the-foot price and the whole-roll price may not have gone up. The other co-op that I use won't sell it by the foot. You have to order the whole roll. And I guess they do that because if you're selling it by the piece, there's always going to be some left over at the end of the roll that's too small for anybody to want and they just have to eat the cost of that.

The way I found out about it was from a guy I work with who is getting into raising cattle and is enrolling in all these Agricultural Extension Service farm programs where they split the cost of certain improvements to your farm like ponds and cross fencing and gravel work like this and in return you agree to abide by their specifications so that aggricultural run-off is lessened and all that stuff. They really promote this stuff for high-traffic areas like around barns, feed lots, hay rings, farm roads and stream crossings, and I can see why. It really cuts down on mud and erosion.

That is cool. If I lived anywhere nearby I'd have to drive to Marfa to see the lights.

Is that like asphalt felt?...

I think that's exactly what it is! I've seen them putting down stuff that looks a whole lot like this stuff on top of the gravel but under the asphalt when they're paving a new road. I think that's why it's so wide. So you should have a great way to get some when you have some left over from one of Mac's jobs.
