Flying fish, now that brings back Vietnam memories, the seas were full of them there. They would pop out of the water and skim along the surface next to the ship, they seemed to like flying along side something big and fast. When they slowed down and came back to the water they would flutter their tails on the surface to gain speed and get back up into their glide.
The officers used to practice their marksman skills by going out on the wings of the bridge and picking them off with a rifle.
