It is a favorite dish around here -- even I love it now.
Pulpo con patatas --- I love to mop up the salsa with fresh made bread.
Pulpo? Is that Spanish for octopus? I've eaten squid before so maybe it isn't so bad. In Hawaii us kids wouldn't buy candy with our nickels we'd buy squid. It was a real treat for us! Thinking about it now, it seems kinda strange.
You were in Hawai'i? When? Where?
Kaneohe, '53-'56 here...
Hickam AFB, Oahu...65-68. Great place for a kid to grow up. A lot of fond memories came from that place. It was beautiful.
Hi you guys -- I was in Pearl in April or May of 1954 on my way around the World.
Wow, Cardy! Were you visiting or stationed there? What was your impression of the place? I was there when they filmed Tora! Tora! Tora!. All those planes overhead about made me wet my pants. I was in duck and cover for about 15 minutes til somebody told me they were just filming a movie. Lol! I thought it was real. Der!
What happened at Schofield? That sounds mighty familiar to me.
The Japanese paid a courtesy call in 1941...
Just visting to show you guys what a real naval ship looked like - :)
Everyone is going to kill me.
And it never got fixed?? You remember the air raid and tsunami sirens, don't you? Did they practice duck and cover at your school, too? That Japanese attack sure left a lasting impression over there. I wonder if they still do those drills.
Those dang sirens sure got the lead outta my pants! Kinda scary for a kid.
Lol, Cardy! I'll spare you if you say you're sorry! :P
Oh, you were just a babe then. Growing up military sure sucked sometimes, but it had great advantages too. I'll bet you have a lot of great memories of it. I never minded the moving so much when I was little, but it gets harder when you get older. Having to leave friends and trying to make new ones. But I've met people and seen places that I wouldn't have otherwise. On the whole it was a great adventure for me.
This my fourth or fifth ship, HMS Newcastle in Hong Kong. I had wrecked my last one in St Ives.
Oh! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there everyone was great. At that time we were not allowed to exchange much money as every dollar had to go to pay off our national debts. So we were only allowed to exchange $5.
Five dollar in Hawaii but our scouts returned and said you could go to a restaurant and get a salad for $5 of course we thought that wasnt very thrilling remembering English salads which were a bit of limp lettuce and a tomato past its prime. But they assured us this was different, and it was huge enough for four people and loads of different stuff --- so for $5 we could feed four.
One bowl of salad and four forks.
But the newspapers published our plight and we had hundreds of people coming and offering to take sailors for a night out. Really nice people.
It was the first time I had heard American radio and it was so action packed it was hard to keep up with it, with its million commercials but it was fun to listen to. Much better than our stodgy BBC. Though I doubt I would hear plays of Euripides on an Hawaiian station. :)
I'm fine. Car is in better shape than I originally feared....*keeping fingers crossed that there are no new developments*
