Yep...that’s what I think, too. He wants to learn the role so he can take it over 2012.
How old is Fred? I imagine by 2012 he'll be a little on the old side, especially if he were to serve two terms.

I’m just pissed because Thompson said all the right things, but didn’t put his heart into it.
In retrospect, it seemed like he was on another acting job.
His candidacy was a snow job, and many of us fell for it.

Fred just comes across as an older man, I suppose.
Thompson was an easy mark: He was wishy-washy, if not evasive at times, on getting into the race. Once he got in, it was later in the game. He ran a lackluster, disorganized campaign; and like you said, he didn't radiate that sense of commitment one would expect.
God help us if it comes down to Rudy and Hurrimccain John.
