Remote detection satellites are used by the intelligence branch of the military to conduct mind control exercises in the theater of war. All this technology is dependent upon the higher branches of particle physics and quantum mechanics. The array of satellites safe in deep space cover the entire earth making the mind control intelligence program widely successful. Be amazed as you view this military program break out of the box. Go to the following web site that shows a real-time mind control zombie being manipulated by satellite and the military. www.MindControlUSA.com
Hm...could there be copper starships?
Well...they'd be purty.
But they'd kinda look like flying Revereware...
And not very lightweight, though.
Panic? No panic.
A guy asked me the other day, "Hey, Man! Is that the sun up there in the sky, or the moooon?"
I said, "What are you asking me for? I'm not from around here."
Nuclear pulse orbital launch vehicle. Year: 1967. Family: Orion. Country: USA.
The heat sink version of Dyson's starship would have a pusher plate made of copper. This would require 5 million tonnes of exposed surface to absorb and then reradiate 1 megaton of bomb energy. The plate would have to be 20 km in diameter.
15 billion kg of deuterium would be used in 30 million bombs. The spacecraft would have an empty weight of 10 million tons and a loaded weight of 40 million tons. The bombs would explode 120 km behind the pusher plate at 1000-second intervals over 500-year acceleration and deceleration periods. Payload would be several million tonnes, enough to house a city of 20,000 people. The starship would reach a velocity of 1000 km/sec. Effective exhaust velocity would be 150,000 seconds. The cost would be equal to the entire Gross National Product of the United States. This generation ship would take 1800 years to reach Alpha Centauri.
Manufacturer: General Atomic. Total Mass: 40,000,000,000 kg (88,000,000,000 lb). Core Diameter: 20,000.00 m (65,000.00 ft).
Not lightweight, no.
ROFLOL. The Ride Of The Valkyrie Skillet. Wave upon wave of two-tone metal discs with black tails descend upon you.
We used to have the original radio series (predates the books, as I recall) on CD. Totally random silliness...but I liked it anyhow.
Heheh...
...The bombs would explode 120 km behind the pusher plate...
Good grief. At that distance most of the bomb energy would be lost to space.
Indeed.
I've always thought the ramscoop concept to be very elegant and intriguing.
*shamefaced*
I understand most of the individual words in that post...but put 'em together, and they're Greek to me...
I've heard portions of the radio series. I've also seen some of the BBC TV episodes.
I have all five books of the trilogy.
Niven used it in his Ringworld series. The rotational speed of the Ringworld was the launch speed for a ramscoop vessel.
I like the idea of finding your fuel in space. It solves many problems.
It doesn't get you faster than light, but you have to start somwhere.
Lightsails may be more likely. Especially if we change to a design based on sending laser energy from very near the sun.
Inherent in that design is the concept of slowing your speed at the end of your journey with something akin to a parachute. At least somewhere, you can slow down.
My preference at the moment is ionic drive. With the ions accelerated to within a gnat's whisker of the speed of light, you'd get "more bang for the buck." Still takes a lot of reaction fuel.
It boils down to an idea to build a starship fueled by atomic bombs. Ugly concept. The very opposite of elegance in design.
1800 hundred years to go four light years. Pitiful.
And making such a mess with the procedure one would expect a galactic cop vessel to come along and vaporize the menace to navigation. Put us out of their misery.
Have you read The Mote In God's Eye"? It's where I recall reading about lasers and light sails together the first time.
Yes, I've read that. Here's another link related to using that technology in-system to make distant worlds habitable.
Sending laser energy from the sun to distant worlds.

Good morning, everyone!
We're all okay here - glad I didn't rush Vlad to the doctor on Friday, because he's fine now, except for his biting issues :-).
We don' need no steenkin' longitude.
We just say, "Bill, which way is food?"
Good Sunday morning all.
Good Morning, glad your child is well. ;)
