GADSDEN, Ala. A mother's report of a stolen car with her 5-year-old son asleep in the back seat was a hoax, and the mother and a man are being held as suspects in the death of the child, authorities said Tuesday.
Etowah County Sheriff James Hayes said the body of the boy, Geontae Glass, and the car that was reported stolen Monday morning were found Tuesday at a residence in Etowah County.
He said the mother, Shalinda Glass, 25, of Rainbow City, and Kevin Andre Towles, who is believed to own the house where the body was found, were being held.
The mother had reported Monday morning that her car was stolen with her son asleep in the back seat in the parking lot of a convenience store in Albertville in neighboring Marshall County. Witnesses reported seeing a man get out of a pickup truck and get into the vehicle before driving away as someone else drove off in the pickup truck.
It was not immediately clear if the boy was dead at the time the car was driven off in Albertville. Authorities at a midmorning news conference in Gadsden said a cause of death is still being determined.
Alabama state troopers and Albertville police had issued an Amber Alert for the boy, who was said to be last seen in his mother's light blue 1994 Nissan Altima.
Gina Keeton, a clerk at the Albertville store, said she saw Glass crying hysterically in the parking lot after she left the store.
"When I asked her what was wrong, she said someone had taken her child and her car," Keeton said.
There is a special corner in Hell for people who hurt children.
Did these women who commit these horrendous crimes learn nothing from the Susan Smith case? They never end up getting away with this. I hope that if she is responsible that she pays with every last breath in her body.
That poor little boy. I'm nauseous now.
I was wondering if this might not be the case. Horrible.
Poor little guy....
Looking at his photo, I just want to bundle him up and protect him. Poor child.
People make me so sick...
Au contraire; Susan Smith did get away with it. She's enjoying a cushy life in a ladies' "detention center" somewhere in South Carolina and I'm sure is eligible for parole in the near future.
Try, convict, execute!
I really hope so. I also hope there a mean rotten cell mate waiting for both these monsters and makes their lives horrible. Prayers for this cute little boy, may God hold him close.
I started to make this comment but held back for fear of flames.
I remember when my son was that age...
If these two did this, I hope that they get sent to general population.
How could they do that to such a cute kid. Sick.
