Yes, I thought so as well. But my question is, what if there weren't enough teams to go around? As I say, it almost happened a few years ago, and there's an additional one or two bowls since then.

Maybe they might cancel the game? Nah...

If there werent enough teams then there would be lots of really good teams that year. Usually there are more than enough bowl-eligible teams, the Big 12 for instance will have Kansas sitting home. The reason being is that 6-6 is only bowl eligible. If there wasnt enough teams overall even with the 6-6 teams then I imagine they would still go by bowl alliances and selection order, IE if the No 8 team from the Big 12 is 5-7 then he would still get the nod because he is the No 8 pick in the league and there are no other available teams.

That must have been one heck of a win-loss list for that North Texas team - no out of conference wins.
