COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) A 14-year-old boy who was throwing eggs at cars along with two other teenagers was shot and killed by someone who had been in a sport-utility vehicle that was hit, police said.
Danny Crawford was killed by a gunshot wound to his upper body, Franklin County Coroner Brad Lewis said. He died in an alley on the city's west side early Saturday, authorities said.
The teens were throwing eggs at cars when an SUV that was struck chased them, Detective Tim Huston said. The vehicle stopped and several gunshots were fired, he said.
Police were looking for the shooter, who fled in the SUV, Sgt. Dana Norman said. The SUV believed to be involved was found a short time later near where Crawford died.
The other teens were not hurt, police said.
Now picture yourself, standing next to SUV man, as he points the gun at the egg-throwing 14 year old. He takes a bead... you say "shoot him!" He shoots, the kid takes a bullet to the belly, slumps moaning against the wall. You say "shoot him again! Now again! Again! Again! Again!" He shoots each time, the egg-thrower taking a bullet to the chest, the head, a different spot each time. Six shots into the vile egg-throwing perp. You walk away with the shooter, arm in arm, proud of your heroic defence of humanity.
You're making it sound as if the internal threat/panic of being hit by a foreign object while driving is an everyday occurrence.
The very fact that the driver reacted so strongly suggests he felt threatened and attacked in a way he's never experienced before.
And unless/until your adrenaline has been activated to that extent, it's hard to pass judgment.
This is a really rough story. Obviously the kid didn't deserve to die for throwing eggs. I wish I could make all parents responsible for their kids actions. Twice in the last five years I have had a back window on my minivan shattered while I was driving. The first time the cops said it was probably a pellet gun and the perps weren't caught. The second time it turned out to be kids throwing rocks at cars. The cops went to the street and got hit by a water balloon as they turned the corner. Kids caught this time and the parents paid for the window.
The catch here? If anyone had been sitting in the seat by the exploding window either time they would have had broken glass embedded in their upper body and face. While cleaning up the glass I got cut more than once. I know the kids in the second incident weren't criminally charged but at least one of the parents called me to apologize and did pay for the damage. They assured me that the kids would be punished at home. I'm so very lucky that my kid wasn't in the back of the car.
The answer? Kids need to know that their actions do have consequences. Again, OBVIOUSLY it shouldn't be death for a prank. Around here kids have to do community service for breaking minor laws. Some kind of punishment needs to be meted out. Something that will impress on the kid that even pranks are irresponsible and punishable.
Shouldn't have been throwing eggs and pissing people off.
Did you misrepreresent my position accidently, or was it a purposeful lie?
About 5 years ago, someone in a car was killed in columbus when kids threw a brick off an overpass.
People who throw things at cars are endangering the lives of those in the automobiles. It is less likely now than a few years ago but an egg in the face through an open window can cause a crash very easily.People who throw things at cars are endangering their own lives as well.
Succinct. Correct.
Over at alt.true-crime is an article about a 12 year old that stabbed her classmate in the heart with a sharpened metal comb. She was arrested and told she might face an attempted murder charge. The girl is quoted as saying, "I'm not scared; it's my mom that'll be in trouble, not me."
Unless kids, or other potential criminals, fear the consequences of their actions it does little to change their behavior. Community service IMO is as useless as detention in schools. Bring caning back, at least for older boys, and see the dramatic improvement in behavior.
SUVs, especially during the SUV mating season, have no sense of humor whatsoever.
Or go to a movie.
Or hang out at a park.
Or any of a billion activities where they do not initiate a crime...
Don't do the crime if you aren't willing to suffer the possible retribution. Yes, including being shot at by the guy whose car you just egged.
Well said.
LOL!
Disturbing that it needs to be said at all.
I can't believe the "cadre of people" here acting like you can choose consequences of your actions.
I can't believe people are getting attacked for "justifying the killing" because of pointing out that actions have consequences.
I don't think the kid would have been killed if he had stayed home and vacuumed the floors for his mom.
Where's PETA! They were aborting little chickens!
what you said!
