The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I bought my sympathy card for PFC N. today. I'll include a letter to go along with the card. That is, if I can bring myself to write it.

I was all sniffly and sad just buying the card, so I thought I'd "reward" myself by doing a good deed. A few blocks from where I live is a house with a blue-star flag and a yellow ribbon prominently displayed outside. As a total stranger, I knocked on the door, introduced myself, and tried to explain that I was truly proud for her son's service, and his family, despite looking and sounding like I just buried my best friend.

After mutual hugs and sniffles, I told my story, and she told hers. Her son in an engineer with the First Cav, and goes out at night to play with IEDs that are called in to them. I then excused myself, went home, and came back with a large "goodie package" she can mail to her son. She invited me back when her husband is home. He's ex-Army, and wanted to "talk shop" with other guys. They will also visit the Hobbit Hole site, since I spent quite a bit of time explaining it was not just me.

She did mention that punks have taken away three of her yellow ribbons from their tree so far. I offered to wire up a trip flare further up in the tree to protect her next ribbon.

Pretty meaningful activity for today, and it's just after lunch now.

What's up?

It was gusty even when I was coming in this morning. Got hit by one strong gust in particular that almost ended with me doing the Miss Gulch thing in the van. Or so it felt.

Sounds like a fun New Year's Eve! I've always preferred that evening with family rather than strangers. ;o)

Hello, all.

As you may know, PFC N, one of 300WinMag's contacts, was killed in Iraq last week. His wife sent WinMag an email that is, quite simply, heartbreaking.

PFC N's funeral will be held at the end of this week --- that is, in a couple of days.

We'd like to send Mrs. N a plant from the Hobbit Hole. To that end, I am collecting donations for a nice plant --- not cut flowers, but something that has roots and green leaves. Donate as much or as little as you can, but, please, do donate. Anything over the price of the plant will be given to Mrs. N, to do with as she sees fit.

If you'd like to donate, please go to http://www.rbent.com/HHFuneralDonation.htm

If you'd like more information about the funeral, FReepmail me.

Remember, the funeral is at the end of this week. I'll be ordering the plant on Thursday morning, so click on the link.

Take care, all.

Thank you Rose, for coordinating this. We've donated $10 for now. Let us know if you don't get the donations you need. We're a little poor right now or we'd do more right off the bat.

I really like the lily looking plant on the bottom, and I think they're a really forgiving plant. I had one at an office I was at and it bloomed nice even indoors.

Thank you, Hair, ecurbh.

I, too, have had excellent luck with that lily, even outdoors (on a shaded porch) in Austin.

Gardenias are a pain to grow, but, durn, they're pretty ...

Working on it. What's a "card security code"?

On the back of your card, near the signature there should be three numbers in small print. That's your security code.

Thank you, Graybeard.

Your credit card has a security code on it --- if it's American Express, it's a 4-digit code on the front upper right corner; if it's Visa, MasterCard, or Discover, the code is three digits and on the back right above the signature strip.

I just noticed this:

Signing up for a PayPal account will be required to complete this purchase.

I don't have a pay pal account, nor do I want one. Is there another way to donate?
