Bikers Playing Fast and Loose

A Suzuki racing bike screaming at 80 mph in a 25-mph zone slammed into Gigliotti on Oct. 4 as she was leaving her job at Long Beach City College, igniting a fireball inside her Ford Escort.

"It is not uncommon to see these kinds of accidents with motorcycles, particularly high-powered super bikes," said Raymond Dennison, the Long Beach detective who investigated the crash. "The whole function is to go as fast as they can."

Not trying to flame anyone here, but personally I have never understood the attraction of having my testicles slapped with a ping pong paddle repeatedly. At least it appears that riding a crotch rocket would feel that way.

"I suppose the author believes that the biker WANTED to crash his bike and wanted to do it at a high rate of speed..."

Obviously, he did. What idiot would think that there would be any other outcome?

"screaming at 80 mph "

80 is hardly screaming. 180mph is screaming.

Yea, we should ban Corvettes, Mustangs, anything that will go over 56 miles an hour.

Or we could just try to change the subject away from an obvious fact, and change our name to "taxed2death".

typical anti-rider story. She pulled out in front of the bike and he's at fault?

"A Suzuki racing bike screaming at 80 mph in a 25-mph zone"

Yeah, read the article. It's the rider's fault.

"We used to screw the the NYS police who would hide out with theor speed traps on I-81. We as a group would buzz them at 170+ mph. When they would chase us, we would split up and circle back on them. Eventually they stopped setting up their speed traps in that section because they knew we would have them chasing vapor trails."

You don't say how old you were when you pulled this stunt, but such action is simply arrogant and stupid.

I've been riding bikes off-and-on since 1969 and have rec'd one speeding ticket (70 on a 55 highway) when I was in high school.

Idiots think their bikes are jet fighters and try to "fly" them as fast as they can go, without regard for anyone or anything else.

Most traffic laws are intended to protect the public from ignorant people. No law can protect the public from idiots.

For any Christians amongst this blog, we need to recall this: "13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king." (1 Peter 2:13 - 17)

No. Racket from the never-stock exhaust would'a warned her in time to get out of the way.

You clearly did not read the whole article.

According to eye witnesses, Boren accelerated with an open throttle from an intersection near the crash site. Dennison said his estimate of 80 mph at the time of impact was conservative. Boren possibly was exceeding 100 mph. The accident report puts the primary blame on Boren's speed.

I find it difficult to estimate the closure rate on a small vehicle traveling at great speed. No wonder someone pulled out in front of him.

It's hard to out run a cops radio waves.

Go to Youtube, click on video's and do a search for motorcycle. Some of the stuff is too funny.

The difference is my Harley riding friends don't generally go that fast in low speed zones. Maybe it's a difference in what they're after from the riding experience over people riding more "racing" style bikes. Or maybe I just generally have less animosity toward the more classic roadster style bikes than the racing style bikes.

Amen. I rode for the experience. Granted, I'd open up out on the highway in the desert, straight away open space, to feel "the speed", but most all of my riding was for the openess experience and I didn't need to be doing 80mph to experience it.

Yep. Nothing new here.

A kid where I work, well he was 21 so he was only a kid to grown up like me maybe, left work after his second shift stint and the same thing happened to him. He was doing 100mph and a truck pulled out in front of him. It was the very first bike he ever owned and it was a serious crotch-rocket. He left behind a new wife and infant child.

Sad.

I've put over 100,000 miles on Sport bikes (crotch rockets) and never felt that. What am I missing? I must be doing something wrong.
:(

arrogant and stupid..... Thanks for the sanity check.

I've never seen the results of dumping a bike at 170, but I imagine that it leaves a really loooong smear.

Sad.

At least the guy in your story didn't take some innocent motorist with him -- that would have been more sad.

had a bunch of guys on crotch rockets weaving in and out of freeway traffic at over 100 MPH one Sunday not too long ago on I-90 in Ohio

There was a brainiac on a crotchrocket who did something like that on a heavily traveled road in front of me just yesterday.

Idiot.

I just laughed and prayed that the only person he killed would be himself.

Legally they're both at fault. The car Failure to Yield, the motorcycle Hazardous or Reckless Driving. I know that sucks but the driver of the car can't get off the hook by saying I didn't see the motorcycle. Its like saying I didn't see that Yield Sign.
