I did a transcription of those tapes at the time they were released.

Really? That would be great! I don't remember ever seeing what was on them. If I were to guess, I'd say they said things like, "It's CGM again...drunk as usual" or "Better go by and check on the kids, she's passed out again.." Clearly they demonstrate the DPD's lack of confidence in CGM's charges or they would not have been destroyed. Don't think it was an accident, either! After defense had filed a motion to save them, it cannot be said that DPD didn't know not to destroy them.
Since you're a certified court reporter, you might notify defense counsel that you have them. Even though you weren't hired to transcribe them, the defense might be able to get them in. All the judge can say is ye, no, or hell no. They'd be helpful to the defense for internal use, at any rate.
