NEW YORK -- When it comes to great guitar solos, Guitar One magazine said Jimi Hendrix tops the list
According to the magazine, Hendrix's solo on "Machine Gun" is No. 1 on its list of the 101 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.
The magazine said Hendrix "can conjure the sound and fury of war -- bombs, guns, diving fighter jets, showers of ammo -- in a single three-and-half minute guitar solo."
It beats out David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," which the magazine described as "not overrated, simply transcendent."
Mark Knopfler's solo on "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits is third, followed by Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."
Hendrix comes back to take fifth place, for "All Along the Watchtower."
Just making the list at 101 is Brad Gillis, on Night Ranger's "Sister Christian."
Guitar One's guitar solo issue comes out Sept. 19.
Those might be embellished by Noel who was really pissed off at Hendrix - nevertheless:
"Hey Joe, Where you goin with that Brick in your hand...
Goin down to beat my ole lady - you know I caught her
messin roun with anotha guy in the band..."
As for Jimi Hendrix, I'd go with "If 6 Was 9"
Saw the same show in San Antonio, 78 or 79
Sabbath sucked-it was too bad. Ozzy was out of it, equipment problems, everything was wrong
VH was good. I am not a fan, but I can appreciate how good they were.
The absence of Blackmore, or his perpetual low rating does not endear me to them.
Dicky Betts - Blue Sky "Eat a Peach"
Stephen Stills - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes "CSN"
His stuff was legendary. He had a UNIQUE sound. Blizzard of OZ and Diary of a Madman were legendary.
That he did. Still, it is impossible to say how he would have developed. He might be playing cello in a community orchestra by now. :)
DOOOH
The should be: The absence of Blackmore on these Greatest of lists, or his perpetual low rating in them, does not endear me to them
Saw no mention of Ted Nugent throughout the thread. Guess he never had a 'solo' to remember but know he is a super talent.
A girl I was seeing at the time had a huge crush on him and loved Journey. Needless to say, I had to take her taste into question at that point.
Had he not taken that spare seat in the helicopter, one can only imagine the work he would have put out since then.
Stranglehold by Ted Nugent.
Ted is great!!! I never got into his solos much, except maybe in "Stranglehold", but is one heck of a guitar player.
I was third row for him in late '79 or early '80 and my ears bled for a week. Probably my favorite concert ever except for maybe Van Halen/Black Sabbath around the same time period.
I seem to remember Hendrix saying that he never played better than his performance at Woodstock. My personal favorite is 'Pali Gap' from 'Rainbow Bridge'.
Yes, and venom soup.
Nugent should be near the top.
Also how rare is a right wing rock star who doesnt do drugs?
I also like Framptons do you feel like we do, that and Stranglehold never gets old.
"Jeff Beck's coming to town"
You will be amazed!
Point well taken. Have you ever heard the story of when Zappa, Hendrix, and Clapton all played, I think it was, the Filmore? Zappa amazed both of them with a set in which he imitated both of their styles in lengthy solos before going on and doing his own stuff.
At least that's what Alice Cooper says.
>> Clapton said chet atkins was the best guitarist he had ever heard. <<
And virtually no first-rate guitarist is going to disagree -- except that if Chet were still alive, he'd probably say Segovia was the best!
Also keith richards in "Sympathy for the Devil" has to be up there somewhere.
John
YES! "Duckwalk!"
