LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bob Dylan says modern recordings sound "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.
"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
Dylan, who released eight studio albums in that time, returns with his first recording in five years, "Modern Times," next Tuesday.
Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."
"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."
Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle.
"Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it."
From the photo you posted on your bio page (great looking family,BTW),it's obvious that you're substantially younger than am I.
Please trust me when I tell you that Dylan's early work (early to mid 60's) is as important and influential as any that's been produced in folk and rock.
Yes, I agree. All very good. Don't leave out Don Henley of Atlanta, TX.
Typical Dylan thread -- half the posters despise him (and think he's a leftist), and the other half are ...well...right :)
>>Thought the title was, "Heartworm Highways,"<<
LOL...you won't believe this, but right after I posted, I had to go back and make sure that that's NOT what I had typed!
Is he still alive?
I agree with you on Joni when it comes to songwriting. She's a songwriting genius,IMO.I've never been a big fan of her performances, however.Agree with you on PP&M also. Some of the film clips from Newport that I've seen recently strengthened my admiration of their talent as well as their stage presence.
I grew up on Dylan (among others). For all of his great albums (and there are many to choose one) I'd pick Blonde on Blonde. For one thing, back in the day, it was 2 LP's not one. But the main thing was that this album was the equivalent of Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan bursting upon the scene. It changed the game for everyone. I think even Dylan has said that he could never do the equivalent of that album again - that he just doesn't write that way anymore.
What I like about PPM is - if you didn't know - one of the guys started the whole 'you are what you eat' thing. These people LIVE what they believe. They aren't sellouts like so many others.
I like Max Stalling but can't recall the other two (Tom Russell and Jim Lauderdale) may have heard their music but wasn't aware of the singer.
I wonder if you're familiar with Peter's past...or present? Both in terms of personal behavior and politics,he's had...shall we say,an "interesting ride".
Yeah, Blonde on Blonde would definitely be in my top 3, and probably #1. (I didn't mention it because it's far from being underrated). His three-album string in '65 - '66 (right before his motorcycle accident) was his creative peak. ....although he's neared that peak (however briefly) several times in the subsequent decades.
Oops, evidently not! I don't care much for most musician's politics.
I love the top 3 too. It's a shame the first two died so young.
Leann Rimes -- has she gotten her act together yet?
I am not familiar with any of the 'autobuys'. I'm sure you're not surprised. :)
I totally agree with your last 2 paragraphs! There is very little 'electronic' music I find anything redeeming in.
No doubt!
I'm a working-musician (besides my day-job) and MTV may not be the sole reason, but its been a major contributor in my book too.
He can't hit or hold a pitch. Never could.
These days,he's a big supporter of the "Julius and Ethel were the victims of a capitalist plot" movement. In fact,I've read that he's very tight with the Rosenberg's kids, who are leading the campaign.
alt.country
I liked his lyrics but someone with a voice should have sung them.
I tend to agree. I sometimes have a hard time with Tom Petty, too. No surprise.
