Barbaro setback 'potentially serious'
PhillyNews ^ | Jul. 10, 2006 | DICK JERARDI

For nearly 6 weeks after the catastrophic injuries Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro suffered in the May 20 Preakness, the colt's recovery from the May 21 surgery on his right hind leg had gone better than even the most optimistic had hoped. From the start, Dr. Dean Richardson, who performed the surgery, warned everyone that it could turn the other way at any time.

In the last week, almost nothing has gone right for Barbaro. Last night, Richardson said the colt has developed "potentially serious'' complications, including an infection in the leg. When asked how he thought this might play out, Richardson said he simply could not be certain.

I am willing to bet the owner won't be hurt too bad by vet bills.

Maybe, maybe not. Define 'hurt'. You assume they're wealthy and that must mean it's just nothing to them. I don't assume that. The vet bills for this horse probably have already passed $50,000. Even most wealthy people acknowledge that to be a lot of money and ~some~ wouldn't spend it.

As it just so happens, the Jacksons had been very large donors to the New Bolton Center through the years. A good investment now, in their peace of mind more than anything else.

Well, it must be true! Chicken thoughts: "Right, left, right, left. Slllooow, sloowww, quickquick ... sloow, slooww, quickquick. Awwwk pluk pluk pluk."

I always thought "In the summertime, when the weather's fine ..." by Mongo Santamaria had those chickens dancing in the background ... sh sh sh, sh sh sh ... "you can reach right up and touch the sky ... skritch, sk-skritch, skritch sk-skritch..."

My husband raises rodeo bulls and just suffered this kind of a loss. While everyone here was cheering the success of the horses treatment I was, and still am, expecting the worst. Our bull Copperhead Driller, spent 2-3 months in a cast at the vets, before dying of infection, in spite of everything possible being done for him. And yes, I expect the owners of the horse can pay the vet bill out of their insurance money.

Sorry for your loss, if it meant anything to you, sourpuss.

I'm guarded about the chances of this too, but I appreciate the task for being more than a mere trifle that costs nothing, emotionally or financially. It's costing a lot, and I hope it plays out in a good way.

You have a nice day Ditter. Please! :~)

Excuse me? Why are you calling me names? I was very hurt by the loss of our bull as I am by the loss of all animals. He was a spectacular animal. You are out of line here.

Rodeo bulls are rock stars, too. Each with its own individual name and personality, for sure. I'm sorry for your loss - bet you have some great photos, though it's no consolation.

Sorry... You've been minimizing that there is any cost at all for these owners. Like it's nothing to them, whether it works or not, insurance will cover it. It probably won't work anyway, you say, but insurance will cover it, so no big woop.

Least that's how I read it. Sorry if I'm wrong, I'm hard on sourpusses. :~)

Good morning.

Copperhead Driller was destined to be a champion. He was 5 years old and unridden at any of the PBR events. We traveled all over just to watch him toss riders off like they were nothing. He broke his leg fighting with another bull in the pasture. I'm still sad about his death, regardless of what HOTD thinks.

Awwww. Maybe rodeo bulls go to Rainbow Bridge, too. There's no fighting there and 8 seconds lasts an eternity.

I'm so sorry, Ditter...that was a horrible tragedy for you all. That Bull sounded amazing to me..

I am certain Barbaro's owners can well afford the VET bill. Heck, they may even have struck a "deal" for a free stud service if the horse survives? Who knows?

Anyway, I am sorry for the loss of your own Champion..

Update 216: Spoke to Michael Matz this morning (thursday). It appears Bobby is still doing OK given all we know. I asked Michael a little more about the press conference this morning. He won't be able to attend, but is aware that Dr. Dean Richardson will be very forthcoming with everything that is occuring (no surprise apparently if you know Dean). Michael also mentioned he received a very nice letter, which he gave to Peter (Brette) to give to me, that discussed this site. I'll look forward to reading it. (Peter could not give it to me since he was on a horse, Michael was on Messaging and I was on one of Tim's horses, whose "nickname" is also Bobby!) I am planning to attend the press conference.

Oh God ...............

"KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. - Doctors treating Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro say he's developed a life-threatening inflammation in his left-hind foot. They say it's as bad a case of laminitis as a horse can get."

"The inflammation was among the worst of the complications that veterinarians feared could happen, as they treated the horse for his severe injuries to his right-hind leg from the Preakness Stakes."

"Doctor Dean Richardson says the horse's chances of recovering are "poor." But he says as long as Barbaro isn't suffering, efforts to save his life will continue."

I just watched the Press Conference. Things dont look good. They cut away 80% of the hoof was because it has seperated from the coffin bone. He needs to grow hard tissue underneath the hoof and grow back the hoof. He said that if he gets this in his bad foot they will not go on. But as of right now, even though his prognosis is poor, he looks very good, he is eating well and is comfortable and happy, they are going to keep going on with him.

This is so very sad.

I must say......... I never understood why horses had to be put down with injuries like this. I had never really known.

This is just awful.

God.............. I pray for this sweet fellow. I'm lloking for a miracle.
