DETROIT (AP) -- Steve Yzerman, the Red Wings' 41-year-old captain who has played his entire NHL career with Detroit, is hanging up his skates.
Yzerman, who was 18 when he joined the Red Wings in 1983, ended months of speculation about his future Monday when he announced his retirement at a news conference.
"My intention throughout the season was to retire, play one last year," Yzerman said. "This is the right decision for me at this time. I really have no doubt about that."
Yzerman led Detroit to three Stanley Cups and playoff appearances in each of the last 15 years of his career. Only Gordie Howe holds as many franchise records.
The Red Wings had the best record in the league in the 2005-06 season but fell to the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the playoffs.
"I really enjoyed the season," Yzerman said. "It ended in disappointment, but that's the one great thing about sports in general. There's no predicting what's the outcome."
Yzerman has been Detroit's captain since 1986, making him the longest-serving captain in league history.

There's were lot of what-ifs in this year's NHL play-offs - but I wonder what would have been the outcome of another Carolina-Detroit Stanley Cup battle?
Who do you think would have won? Or do you think that Detroit wouldn't have made it to the Finals even if they had beaten Edmonton?
Anyone?

I don't know.
Detroit faced the one team in the West that had a .500 record against them (all the others had losing records).
I'm sure every round would have been a dogfight from the get-go, but to be a homer, I'll just say they would've won it all :)
A rematch with Carolina would have been interesting to say the least.

Meanwhile, anyone who's ever really watched Yzerman play thinks that he is a classy player and one of the best ever. You, on the other hand, don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Kudos to a fine player and classy exit by this Buffalo fan. Perhaps one of the last we will see who spends their careers with one team...

yeah with the new labor agreement, I'm afraid you are correct.
Although I think another Red Wings has a very good chance at doing the same thing (Lidstrom)....

My hero, a really good man and talented athlete!
Thanks for the memories, Stevie.
Go Wings!
To: mikrofon
You are correct, Yzerman is like a son to millions of us in Michigan, we have seen him grow up.
Old men cried like babies when we won the cup, and Stevie skated around with it held high.
What terrific memories he gave us.
To: xpertskir
What a total jackass you are! Were you too stupid to notice that this isn't a thread about a team? It's about an individual player who spent his entire career, from the drop of the puck to the fat lady singing, playing for the same team. During that career (which included how many of Lord Stanley's Cups?) he never once behaved in an unsportsmanlike manner. Yzerman is a class act, from start to finish. The only bad rubbish on this thread has been you, pally.

Do yourself a favor...get lost. If you can't appreciate a class act that tells us all we need to know about you. Go back to DU where you belong.

Hockey Ping!
Arguably the best to wear the "C" on any team.
Pure class, in the room and in the community.
Freep mail/ping airborne or Hat-Trick if you want on or off the Hockey Ping List.
