the vet said that a splash of tomato juice in with the dog's food was good for the dog and would help prevent the yellow spots on the lawn.

My bad and that vet must have needed business. I just googled up "dog health +tomato juice" and there were several cautionary articles about altering a dog's pH output and possibly causing bladder infections, stones, etc. A more enviromentally friendly approach was to water the area and then sprinkle about a tablespoon of sugar over the area to feed the soil microbes. Our across the street neighbor's puppy used to get out and sprinkle our yard. She must have gotten four different places, because that's how many yellow spots we had. I just kept watering the areas, and now they're growing grass again.
