The Hobbit Hole XXX - Then world behind and home ahead...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 06/28/2006 10:14:11 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Then world behind and home ahead

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'd make a distinction between the feed store and McDonalds. I think the bottom line for me is, if you sit down at a table to eat, take your hat off.

It's probably a larger issue for me than just hats. It's a whole mindset of people not knowing how to dress appropriately. I've seen people show up at funerals and semi-formal weddings in jeans and t-shirts. I don't buy the argument that "that's the best they have."

And, our day at Busch Gardens just reinforced that. Once again I had the experience of watching people and thinking that they got up that morning, looked in their closets and said "this looks good."

Then again, maybe I'm just a cantankerous old fart.

Both are probably true, they probably are wearing something inappropriate, and you probably are also a cantankerous old fart :~)

Well I can't. My dog is afraid of the outdoors.

Do you like my hat?

No, I do not like your hat.

Goodbye.

Goodbye.

A vacuum cleaner's a great present if you need one. I got one as a present... from my dad once.

I suppose. A better vacuum cleaner would be nice. But, in our household at least, vacuuming is a "we" chore. Giving me a vacuum cleaner suggests it is a "me" chore. If vacuuming really is a "we" chore then the gift is not really for "me" but rather for "us" and that's kind of tacky. IMNSHO. Walter E. Williams, who sits in for Rush on Fridays, loves to portray his wife as an employee. Her job description is taking care of the household, to include all the cleaning. His idea of a great gift is to give her tools/appliances that are necessary for her to perform her duties and that he would have had to purchase eventually anyway. By economizing thusly, he saves money and keeps a valued employee happy.

Oh, Big'ol was going to take me out for dinner. Then my MIL called and invited herself and my FIL. *sigh*

Well, around our family, as you can guess from the gift of 'anchor chain', many presents are presents for the 'house' as well as the person :~)

Our household, too. It was one of my Dad's biggest pet peeves and a criteria in his assessment of any of my potential significant others. He was much relieved when I married an Army officer. ;)

There's that. But there are plenty of other occasions for that kind of gift giving. We usually put an "us" item or two under the tree at Christmas.

Big'ol now claims he's just pulling me leg with the vacuum cleaner thing. Urgh.

Ramius built one desk last night and started the rolling printer cabinet this morning. I finished it and started on the bookcase.

Unfortunately, the bookcase looks wonky - so I've stopped before I end up with a trapezoid-lookin' thing.

Ramius will fix it when he gets home. :-)

And speaking of projects, he went ahead and ordered the captain's bed along with 2 nightstands and a dresser. Here's the catch, we're gonna finish it ourselves. Yikes!

Hey...you and ecurbh wanna come over this weekend for a beer? You can bring the kids if you like. ;-)
