This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

What are they made of? It looks like leather but it doesn't feel like leather.
Bummer about the squirrel! I'll bet Pippin bit him in the neck or the back and damaged his spinal cord. If he doesn't recover but doesn't die, you might have to dispatch him yourself, or get ecurbh to do it. Not fun!
That's them. Every time I used it I tightened them but not much is holding when I can use my nail for a screw driver. It's a nice leather bridle and I want to keep it so I'll get some of this.
I think the squirrel is really shocky... I've been trying to leave him alone, but the last time I went out there he hadn't moved at all and was even less responsive. He'll die.... poor little guy.
Good. I'm not a big fan of Chicago screws, for that reason. They never stay tight. But that LocTite stuff really works.
That's about all you can do.
I've had concerns since I first saw them. I plan on putting some of those ties Becky suggested in. It has always bothered me. The first time I saw it I was thinking, "this is all that is holding it?"
I've always called it 'biothane'. It's a vinyl coated nylon web.
The ties also work. The Chicago screws are nice and tidy once they're 'glued'.
Your new halter bridle doesn't have Chicago screws on it does it?
Any special care needs? There were no instructions with it. One of the other things that I like, is that it is easier to clean the bit. I know a lot don't but I like to wipe my down after use.
No. They were on my leather bridle. This one is stitched and buckled. Pic coming.
Your rain has headed on over to us! :-) So far it's just a drizzle, though.
I think that horse people just like to watch other horse people. Heck sometimes I have an audience if I'm just grooming and tacking up. :-) People will just sit and watch.
THat's true. I do too. My crowd was friendly. It was something new. I would have just liked to have looked more proficient though. The boy gets fitted today and I've got in now though.
Nah, that's the beauty of it. I just throw mine in the water trough when I get back from riding and rub it down a little bit to get the muddy sweat off of it so that the brass stays clean, but other than that, nothing. Just hang it to drip dry. I might polish the brass once a year if I'm going to a parade or something.
The ride went well:). We only went for a little more then a hour tho. It's really getting hot again. I'm going to have to get started earlier then today.
Ride in parades:).. you're really brave. I tried that a few times around here, but the people, spectators and riders, are all nuts, at least here they are:) The spectators want to get close, and throw candy...and the riders at the end of the parades seem to want to just dash down the asphalt/cement roads to get back to their trailers as fast as they can. Scared me t death the few times I did it.

I always enjoyed 'em, especially the night time ones. Tennessee was pretty bomb-proof so it made it a more enjoyable adventure. But you're right, most spectators have no idea how to act around horses and will dash right under a horse's nose to grab a piece of candy. And the Shriners seemed to delight in runing their little crazy cars right in front of them too. You'd think they'd be old enough to know better. I once had a guy driving some kind of rig with a siren to wait 'til he got right on top of me and turn on his siren. I'm sure he thought he'd spook my horse and get a big laugh out of my reaction, but Tennessee didn't spook. I gave him an eat-$hit-and-die look then went on watching the parade. Some people are just ignorant, and that's forgivable, but some people are just @$$holes and need their butts kicked! ;o)
I did go out to the gun club and sell some of my reloading components. Being as I have not being doing any shooting, I might as well get rid of that stuff.
